• Wellington, Friday. • Alexander Macdonald, who has often' been mixed up with Maori disturbances in Manawatu, being- au adopted member of a tribe, yesterday deliberately shot one of the leaders in Young's Napier Coach in assertion of a right to some land over which the road runs, —The ship 'Golden Sea,' with2B6 immir grants, has arrived, and been taken into quarantine. The cause is unknown, there having been no com munication with her yet. •

8 p.m. Tho ship 'Golden Sea' has been quarantined in .consequence of 11 deaths having occurred through scarlatina among children. There is no sickness now. The detention will be short. Tho mortality occurred in the tropics. There were 18 cases altogether.—The New Zenland Shipping Company's steamers will take their rest at Port Chalmers instead of the Mnuukau, as heretofore.—TUo

Colonial debenture tender should rea half-a-cent. lower. Nemon, Friday. A cottage at Wakefield was destroyed by fire this morning. Mrs Wright, the sole occupant, was burned to death. Chbistchuhcb, Friday. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the College yesterday a deputation attended tho sitting from the Unversity Council of Wellington. The draft of a bill was agreed to by the University Council and the delegates from Otago and Canterbury, and was also laid on the table. It is published in today's paper. The land sales for the month ending April the 30th amount to £50,175 h 6d.
