MINING MATTERS.
Golden Calf.—A cleaning tip and retorting for the Golden Calf Company took place yesterday at the Prince Alfred battery, after three weeks' crushing with 5 head of stampers, which-reduced 120 tons of stuff. The yield amounted to 121ozs 14dwta. ' It was expected last night that communication between the 260-feefc and the 200-feet levels would be effected before morniDg. The advantage to be derived from this communication will be very considerable, for it will open up a large extent of the reef for working, and will enable the manager to break out stuff for .a much larger force of stampers' than has been hitherto employed, Albobnia.—There was nothing more done on the new'reef yesterday, aud the pwager now intends driving ou its course,
but allowing the lode to remain intact. There was, however, a nice parcel of specimens to hand from a portion of the hang-ing-wall lode opened in a new drive entered at the Star of the South level. Cray of London.—The manager has started to drive both ways oa the now reef in order to open it up, and at the same time recover the No. 2. reef at the other side of it. The new lode is a splendid-looking one five feet wide in one of the faces, and three feet in the other. It looks well for gold,* although there is none visible in it, but we are informed that some of the stuff which has been sent to the mill has made as good a show on the plates as that from any other part of the mine.
Manukau.-There was a nice parcel of picked stuff to hand yesterday from the Manukau mine, and some stones of richer quality than any previously found in the reef were taken out. Gold showed in both hanging-wall and foot-wall of the reef yesterday. BiED-iN-HAND.-The manager bored through to the bottom of the winze from the main level yesterday, and all the gas which had accumulated in the winze fell through to the level, thus creating a temporary suspension of operations; but it soon cleared away again. The quartz paddock is now full, and everything is in readiness for a fair start at crushing on Monday next.
