MINING MATTERS.
Caledonian.—The weokly retorting for the Caledonian Company took place yesterday, and ' the result obtained amounting to lOOozs gold was considerably in excess of recent returns, although the quantity of stuff reduced was rather less than usual. In the mine there is no particular change to note. There has not been any further quartz or reef found in the main cross-cut from the bottom level, and the stuff crushed is mainly out of the intermediate .level lodes. .
City of London.—The new lode to which we alluded in yesterday's issue was apparently cut through last evening, and shows a width of 3| feet of nice quality stone. Itis composed of' a gritty quartz intermixed with dark sandstone, and contains a large, proportion of pyrites of copper. and ■ other minerals, which in the other lodes are the chief indications of the presence of gold. There has not, however, been gold yet visible in the stone broken out, but all the indications so far are in favour of its auriferous quality. In fact its similarity to the other cross-reef which, as our readers are no doubt aware, has been the principle source from which the recent rich crushings and dividends were obtained, is of itself a most encouraging indication, and we are strongly inclined to believe that this last find is one of very great importance to the company. ,OiiD Whau.—The increased richness which we noticed in yesterday's issue in regard to the quality of tho picked stuff coming to hand from this mine was very apparent yesterday. There was a lot of 3201bs of very superior quality to hand yesterday afternoon from tho stopes on the hanging-wall reef. Manukau.—The crushing for' the Manukau Company continued to show up as richly as ever yesterday, and so far as the mine itself is concerned tho lode looks as well as it has done since found, and now that it is more developed there is hotter. opportunity for breaking out stuff iu large quantity.
