Fraser, Esq., R.U.)" ;, Bbeaoh op the Qcaetz CbushinoEKoatATioNS.— fhomis Manning was oha.'ged that- he, being the owner of a certain machine used in extracting gold from ore or mineral substance, did tinlawfully 'omit to enter in the registerbook, form B of the rules, a true and correot account of all ore or mineral substanoe received by him for treatment at his: machine; on the ht instant. . The charge was laid by Sub-Inspector Bullen, under the;7th section of the rules made under the Quartz Crushing ; , Regulations and Inspections Act,, which prescribed a penalty of £200 for a breaoh of the regulations.—Mr. Dodd 'appeared- -for 1 -the defendant, and pleaded not guilty, and inasmuch as the summons.was• only served yesterday, ovening, he would ask for an adjournment.—Mr Bullen opposed any. adjournment, as it would be subversive of the ends of justice., He would ask the Court, howeyer, to hear the case, for the proseoulion.—Mr Hodd said that it was not giving them a fiir .chance. He was only consulted this morning,,and he was .totally unacquainted with the nature of the defence, so that ho could not crossexamine the witnesses.—Mr Bullen asked, inoase his Worship decided to grant the' adjournment, that' the defendant should be held to recognisances as provided for in the Justices of the Peace Act. It was a quasi-criminal proseoution.—His Worship consulted the Aot, and granted the adjournment until Wednesday next, the defendant to enter recognisances of £200' i for his appearance oa% that day, and one good surety of £200. It was at the option of the defendant to accept the adjournment, or go on with the case, otherwise he would adjourn the 1 ' oase until half-past eleven o'clocS, so that Mr Dodd might have an opportunity of consulting his client.—Mr Dodd elected to obtain the recognisances, and the oase .was adjourned until Wednesday, the Bth inst. KxrENsioti op Liobnses. — Mary Elizabeth Hahham applied for permission to have music and dancing in her licensed house, the Prince Alfred .Hotel, Grahams town, on the evening of the 2nd instant. There was no objection on behalf of the police, and the application was granted, subjeot to the usual conditions.— William Rose applied to have the license of the Chamos Hotel extended to the Parawai Gardens on the occasion of the Easter Monday sports. The application was granted.
