WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) April 20.—The recent rain has been responsible for a “fresh" in the river, which has considerably improved the entrance to the port. . • A euchre party and dance was held in the Tikorangi Hall on Tuesday evening was well attended, ten tables being occupied. The prizewinners were Miss 0. Carroll and Mr. H. E. Hicks. An enjoyable dance was held the music being supplied by Miss ICnuoky, Mr. H, Alexander acting as M.C. Local residents are congratulating themselves on the possession of the high i pressure water supply. The fire on j Mr. Jones’ premises must have reached i largo proportions in the absence of a ■' water service. Another feature too, which should not bo forgotten, was the smart manner in which the bridage turned out and mastered the blaze in about 20 minutes. Mr. M. Jones has I received many expressions of sympathy ■ in his loss, widen luckily, thanks to ! the firo brigade, will not amount to > more than £SO. Mr. Jones is making j immediate arrangements to resume work. _ i A concert in aid of tho general funds ; of tho Waitara Methodist Church was held in St. John’s Hall on Tuesday ! evening. Tho weather conditions | doubt-less interfered with the atten- ; dance, but those present put in an ; enjoyable time. The first part of the 1 programme was occupied by Professor 1 Touns, a local conjuror and illusionist, i Ho bewildered the audience by tho j smartness of _ his tricks. "Fifteen j minutes in .Spirit' Land” concluded his j performance, and was most mystifying, i the business being very neatly done. ' After the interval tho following vocal 1 and instrumental programme was gone through:—Piano solo, “Spring Morn- ' mg,” waltz, Mr. F. Von Lubbe; song, ' “Life,” Mr. A. V. Stamp; violin solo, i “Avo Maria” (Gounod), Mr. Von; Lubbe (encored); song, “Anchored,” Mr. W. J. Smith, encore number, i “Love could I only toll thee;” song, I “Thora,” Mr. Von Lubbe; song, ; “Nirvana” (Adams), Mr. Stamp; song, ; “The Deathless Army,” Mr. Smith, I encore number “An Evening Song”;; violin solo, “Shepherd’s Dance,” Mr. I Von Lubbe, encore number, intermezzo I from “Cavallier Rusticana” Several i ladies and gentlemen from New Ply- I mouth were unable to get out. Mr. Von Lubbe w,as the only representa- I tive from that town ,and he proved a ■ host in himself. This was his first j appearance locally, and ho can, rely j upon a warm welcome from the music j loving people of this town, should he again visit Waitara. Both as a pianist j and violinist this gentleman has exceptional ability. In his own composition, “Spring Morning,” waltz, on the piano, lie gave a finished interpretation of a dainty theme, while in tho violin solos, his performance was a very finished ono, the stopping being delightfully true. Tho accompaniments throughout the evening were sympathetically played by Mrs. P. J. Allen. At tho conclusion tho Rev. W. Wills thanked tho audience for their attendance, and moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers, which was carried by acclamation.
