TARIKI.

TARIKI SAAV MILL SPORTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The second annual meeting of the nhovo was held on Easter Monday in Mr. Ivaralus’ paddock, and in spite ot many counter attractions on that date the attendance was very good and a most successful gathering resulted. The chief interest was centred in tho chopping and sawing competitions, for which there were good entries, and very close and exciting finishes were tho order of tho day. In the 18-ineh saw event liilski Pros., after a ding-dong go, scored a popular win in 15? sec., and the 18-inch standing chop was won by tho well-known axeman AV. F. Dowman from scratch, and his fine display of axemanship was a pretty sight. The general arrangements both tor competitors ami the public were excellent, and reflect much credit on the committee, which consisted of Messrs. T, A r . Simons (chairman), T. Gardner, A r . lliloy, M. J. Jones, J. Linklater, J. M. liilski, J. Kindberg, T. Shroider, V. liilski, L. ■James, I*. Roguski, 6. Karalus, M. Ivaralus, and G. Simons. The important office of secretary was filled by Mr. J. P. liilski, who rendered invaluable services in that capacity. Air. C. T. Young ns starter and Messrs. T. V. Simons and T. Gardner as handicapper and judge gave every satisfaction. The refreshment booth was run by Air. J. Fahish, who well deserved the hearty attention he received from tho public. Tho attendance at the ball held in tho Hall in the evening was also very good. The room was tastefully decorated with nikau palms, anil the Highland costumes worn by several of the gentlemen added to the general effect. Mr. Harnett presided at the piano amt Mr. Stratford acted as M.C., tho only complaints heard coining'; from some of tho younger folk that it was all over too soon. They felt “good enough” for another hour or two. April 17.—A cricket match v. Rawhitiroa was played in Mr. Young’s paddock on Good Friday. Tho morning was wet and many ot tho weathenviso prophesied a rainy day. However, tho Rawhitiroa cloven was composed of x'cal sports, who wore not to bo kept at homo by such trifles as a few heavy showers when a good day’s cricket was in view and were all on the ground ready before most of the local players put in appearance. A very enjoyable game resulted in an easy win for the visitors. The captain of tho local team at the conclusion of the match, in tho, course of a short speech, demarked that this was the first visit Rawhitiroa had made to Tariki and the fact that they started in very unfavourable weather and came so far'to fulfil tlioir engagement stamped them as real sportsmen, and they well deserved the success they had won. , Ho hoped that Tariki would have the pleasure of playing many more matches with them in the future.—(Applause.) Mr. J. AValker, captain of the visitors, in replying, complimented Tariki on their ground, which lie considered wan the best they had played on this Season. Ho expressed on behalf of his eleven the pleasure they ,had derived from the day’s sport and reciprocated the Tariki captain’s wish for future encounters.
