CONFERENCE IN CHRISTCHURCH,

Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. At tho Sawmill Employees’ Conference a remit that tho President of tho Court of Arbitration bo elected instead of appointed, and that ho bo not a judge of the Supremo Court, was negatived, no delegate voting for it. The conference affirmed tho principle of statutory and unconditional preference to unionists, and agreed to remits that 44 hours should constitute a week’s work; that the Government be urged to extend the State sawmills, coal and firewood yards, and establish timber yards' to regulate the price of timber; that re-afforesta-tion bo urged upon the Government. A remit raising tho question of tho union joining one or other of tho Labour Federations was struck out. Tho Miners’ Federation was severely criticised and tunned "a rabble” and “a revolutionary mob.” It was agreed that tho unions affiliated to tho Sawmills’ Federation should consider, tho visableness of joining the Trades Councils Federation of Labour. It was decided to protest strongly against the Government’s immigration policy. Tho next conference will bo held at Tirnaru next Easter.
