Taranaki Herald. (DAILY EVENING.) THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 1911. THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
If the burgesses of New Plymouth are inclined to be apathetic in municipal affairs they have at least shown a wise discrimination in retaining the services of Mr. Tisch as Mayor of the town for another year, and both they and Mr. Tisch aro to. he congratulated, the former upon being so well served, the latter upon the renewed confidence in him displayed by his fel-low-citizens. We hope that during the ensuing twelve months Mr. Tisch will be able to bring to fruition the schemes he has so much at heart—the amalgamation of the borough and, the suburban areas under one local governing body, and the electric tramways. To however, be must have the energetic and loyal support of the Council. The work must not be left to him alone, for nothing is more discouraging to a man who is striving, as he believes, for the general good than to find the public indifferent and the individuals who ought to bo working side by side with him doing/ nothing but criticise. Thanks to the newlyformed Municipal Progressive Association a little new life has been infused into borough affairs, though we may still lament the apparent indifference of many should take a leading and active part in local politics. In the East Ward there will be no contest, the three nominees of the Municipal Progressive Association having been returned unopposed. All are practically untried men, for the two retiring Councillors who have been re-elected were not long enough on the old Council to make their presence felt. views, and those of their new confrere, on the most important questions are, we believe, those of the majority of the electors, and we do not doubt that they will prove themselves energetic in their suppjjrt,of the Mayor in carrying out the policy he has outlined. In the Central Ward the electors have four candidates to select from, two of whom have been on the Council for some time, while the other two have in other directions given something more than a taste of their quality. In the West Ward the threo retiring Councillors offer themselves for re-election, and two new men, both nominated by the Progressive Association, also come forward. Of these, Mr. J. C. Morey formerly served a term as a Councillor and has therefore a record to point to, while Mr. N. T. Maunder has, we believe, had experience of public affairs elsewhere. It is for the electors to make a selection on Wednesday next; all we need say is that we hope it will be a wise one and that the new Council will give the Mayor a generous and active support in advancing the best interests of the town.
