OSCAR BERG.

Hon. Sec. New Plymouth Cricket Club New Plymouth. Saturday.

[Mr Berg appears to labour under a misapprehension. I am not a member of any cricket club in Taranaki, but a member of the literary staff of the Taranaki HersJd. There is therefore no reason why 1 should be "annoyed and rufHed'" over the state of cricket grounds in this district. Mr Berg's letter lUelf shows that the Tukapa pitch badly needed attention. It should not have been allowed to get into the state it iell into. I am glad to sec that the Saturday Fixture Committee is of opinion that cricket is played more for the sake of the game than the piling up of cup points. It is a pity that this opinion is not held more generally. But it docs not explain why the matches mentioned by me were postponed so casually. I would point out that cricket associations are established for the good of the game, and draw up lists of fixtures tor the .same reason. It is not conducive to good cricket and to good feeling amongst the clubs for them to find that a match is postponed for such a .slight reason as that given for the postponement of the High School-Fire Brigade match and the consequent throwing out of gear, so to speak, of tho fixtures. If the Fixtures Committee considered that the High SchoolFire Brigade match should be postponed because the tennis tournament was in progress, why did it not postpone all the matches set down for that day, and thus keep the matches within their proper rounds? As for the Egmont Village-Fire Brigade game. T made no allusion to that, but to tinEgmont Village-United Service A match.- "Argus. "l

Last Thursday at Kltliam, Toko nn<\ Kltham mot to docirV 1 tho championship of" tho Stratford district, hut Hio j^ame was no! finished. Toko's innings closed tor 14!) and at tho call of timp Elthani had four wickets down for 74 runs. O'Connor (Toko> played a splendid game, scoring 6') and carrying his bat.
