The Waihi Borough Council, winch was called upon to reduce its bank overdraft from £25,000 to £20,000, has decided to set aside out of each monthly remittance of gold duty the sum of £500 until the overdraft is down to £20,000. It will be necessary to effect severe economies in the public works ot the boron gh, and 43 men, mostly married, w ill be discharged. We have to thank the Pacific Cable Company, through Mr J. H. Stevens, acting-Chief Postmaster, for a handy little note-book. The garden party at "Aotea" on Thursday next should attract a l ar g* attendance if the weather holds good. The committee have decided to go on with the function in any case, and bhould it be wet on the day a musical "At Home" in St. Mary's Hall will be substituted, to be held on the same day. The Garrison Band have kmdly promised to contribute an excellent programme ot music at the garden party. A special service of 'buses will run* to the grounds, commencing at about 2 o'clock. Afternoon tea will be provided gratis to visitors. It is requested that those contributing supplies to the garden party will leave them at Mrs Devenish's, York Terrace, or at St. Mary's Hall on Thursday before noon. Morey and Son announce tho last five days of their summer sale, bee advertisement. A meeting of those interested in the i Hospital Saturday and Sunday is called for Wednesday next in the Council Chamber. . ,-,, , A meeting of the Fitzroy Tennis Uno is advertised for to-moirow evening.
