MME. STEINHEIL'S LOVERS

Fifth Phase. — In her interview with the two journalists Mme. Steinheil admitted to having a lover at the time of the crime. It now appears that lie is M. Maurice Borderel, Mayor of Ba-baire-et-Butz, in the Ardennes, a mid-dle-aged widower, who has several children.

He has been examined by M. Andre.

M. Borderel stated that he made the acquaintance of Mme. Steinheil at the house of wealthy persons of honourable position. She invited him to visit 4 her and presented him lo her husbatid. He bought several of M. Steinheil's paintings, paying high prices for them. The relations between M. Borderel and Mme. fcjteinheil afterwards became very intimate, and led to meetings in the villa at Bellevue.

He did not see her .during the fortnight before the tragedy. Their relations since then had only been indirect, but he continued to send her, by the intermediary of a third person, various sums of He never had any intention of marrying Mme. Steinheil, and on the only occasion on which the subject was mentioned between them he told her he loved his children and his liberty too much to think of such a thing.
