WELLINGTON.

We learn from the Independent of the 20th ult. that the first of this season's clip of wool was brought over from Messrs. Cliffoid's station at the Kai Koras on the Fiiday previous. The clip bids fair to be unusually heavy, and of good quality, but shearing progressed slowly by reason of the want of hands. This appears also to be the ense in (he Wairarapa, nndcau«cs great unensinoss both as regards the shearing and the washing. Our contemporary makes an appo.il to the settlements generally, in favour of a preliminary fund for defraying tin; expenses to be incurred in making a survey, &c. of the copper mines recently discovered by Mr. Wrey in the vicinity of the Dun Mountain at Nelson. At a meeting of the coal company, the following resolution was carried : — " That a ptovisionnl committee be appointed for the purpose of raising subsciiptiona in aid of the expense of obtaining a survey of the co.il district at P.ikawau, together with the necessary yjlita and information for ascertaining tife practicability of working the coal, aud that the committee do put themselves in communication with the Nelson committee for that purpose." A committee was formed in futtherance of the objects stntod. The Independent contains Mr. Gladstone's speech on the second reading of the New Zealund Bill, with a long editorial commentary. Both arc too long to be given in our columns verbatim ; but, if an opportunity offers, we are desirous of giving some portions of the foimer, which, as might be expected, contains much valuable matter.
