Sir,—l am istructed by the Governor-in-Chief to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 27th i ult., covering a memorial from a number of the inhabitants of New Plymouth, requesting that a Weekly Overland Mail may be established between Wellington and Auckland. In reply, I am to acquaint you, for the Information of the Memorialists, that His j Excellency regrets his inability at present to comply with their wishes, the strength of the police force being unequal to the discharge of such an increased amount of duty. I am, however, to add that, so soon as the revenue will admit of a weekly postal communication between the points named, His Excellency will endeavour to give effect to the desire of the Memorialists.
