GOLD IN QUEEN CHARLOTTE'S ISLAND.
This Island is north of Vancouver's Island, on the North West coatt of America, shout 1200 miles Nortli of San Franciico. It it about 180 mile' long, and varies from 80 to 10 miles in breadth, and is inhabited by semi-barbarous tribes tribes of Indians. Sir John Pfckington in a speech in the House of Commons said— 'that tho Government ht*e recoirod despatches from the Governor of Vancouver's Island, stating tho foot of tho dlicoveryof gold In Queen Charlotte's liland. Thf Governor states that ho hrs hesre rcporte to the effect that that discovery is of considerable rxient, but I »m not able to give any accurate information with regard to the extent of it. I hnve alto been informed that some American ships with American citizens on board (from California, I bolieve)have proceeded in coinequcnco of that diicovcry to Cjaecn Charlotte's Island j and it was expected that more Amecan ships would follow. Upon receipt of that In,, formation Her Majetty.t Government sent directions to the Admiral commanding on tho station, desiring that naval assistance might be sent to Queen Charlotto's Island to preserve order under these circumstances. (Hear.) With reference to that portion of tho enquiry which relates to the measures that sre to be taken, my right honourable friend will perceive that that is a question of some difficulty. All I can say upon that head at preient is, that it is under the consideration of the Government who have given no directions for any survey of the island. It is stated that an official from Vancouver's It* land had arrived In London, with full information roipectlng the gold, which will of course be available by tho Colonial Office.
Titles.— Several yean ago there was a young Englith nobleman figuring away at Washington. Ha had not much brains but a vatt mimhor of titles, which, notwithttauding our pretended dislike to them, have sometimes tho effect of tickling the car amazingly. Several young ladies were in debate, going over tho list— be is Lord Viscount so-nnd-so, Baron of such a country, &c. "My fair Wends," excltimcd tho gallant Lieutenant N— , " one of his titles you seem to have forffotton." — «■ Ah" exclaimed they eagerly,' 1 what is that!' — " He is Barren of Intiilcct," was the reply. " If you don't give roe a penny," said a youn' hopeful to his minima, " I know a boy that's got tho meatles, and I'll go and catch 'em— to I will."
