THE Thames Guardian AND MINING RECORD. THURSDAY , AUGUST 29, 1872.
The arrival of the Nevada yesterday brings news to July 15tli. feo far as it lias reached us it is meagre and not remarkably important. The Xew York Herald gives an interesting, account of Mr iStauley’s meeting with Dr. Livingstone. The great traveller gives a graphic account of his explorations. He states thst the Chamberei is the
source of the Nile, ami speaks in very inviting terms of the countries through which the great head waters flow. Rich copper exists in these regions, and ivory abounds. It appears not improbable that portions of this territory will, ere long, be occupied and utilised by enterprising Anglo Saxons, who will convert the wilderness into prosperous colonies. The length of the Nile is reported to be 2,G00 miles. The Alabama Arbitration Commissioners are still sitting at Geneva. The proceedings are being conducted secretly. Chief-Justice Cockburu, it is said, will be raised to the peerage for his services in connection with this arbitration. Apart from these special services, the Chief-Justice has had a most brilliant forensic and judicial career, which would be fitly recognised by his being elevated to the House of Lords. A bill has been introduced into the British House of Commons, by Mr Morrison, called the Proportionnl Representation Bill, under which such a town as Birmingham would have seven members, Liverpool eleven, London sixty-two, and so on. We should think the bill is hardly likely to become law, although in view of the vast increase of population in certain towns, especially the Metropolis and the great manufacturing centres, some re-distri-bution of seats will probably take place at no very distant date. Prom America the report reaches us of the conclusion of the trial of Stokes for the murder of Fisk. The jury could not agree, and after being locked up for two nights were discharged without giving a verdict. The report does not go on to say whether Stokes is likely to be tried again. In England he probably would be. How it may be in New York we don’t know. A satisfactory piece of intelligence as regards New Zealand is, that the price of wool is keeping up well. The Times considers the chances of Greeley being elected President very doubtful, and says he could not, if elected, be four months in office without making some terrible mistakes. A fearful railway accident has occurred in Canada to an express train, full of passengers, amongst them several Church of England Ministers, who weie returning from the Synod at Toronto. A large number wee killed and others seriously injured. Storms have been raging in England, and the middle and Southern countries have suffered severely : several fatal accidents occurred. The feeling of loyalty, which is one of the characteristics of the British people, has again manifested itself on the occasion of the Priuce of Wales passing through Bethnal Green to open a Museum, when an < normous and enthusiastic crowd lined the streets and cheered him as heartily as on the occasion of his going to St. Paul’* on the late thanksgiving day. Bethnal Green, as most of our readers are doubtless aware, is in one of the poorest districts of London, and contains a population not over burdened with worldly riches or honors. Such a tribute from them is not without its significance at the present time, when people of the Dillce class are endeavouring to stir up the feelings of the people against Monarcliial institutions.
