HOKITIKA.
There are grave objections to certain clauses proposed in the Gold Fields Bill, also to the alteration of the Westland waste lands.
REPORTED CASE OF SMALL-POX. Dr Sam called upon us last evening to contradict the statement which appeared in the Evening Star, that he gave it as his opinion that Mr Stoney was suffering from small pox. What occurred was, according to Dr Sam’s statement, simply that he visited Mr Stoney yesterday, and found him somewhat feverish and covered with eruptions of a complex nature. Taking into consideration that people now-a-days become alarmed at the least cause, he advised the inmates of the house to be particularly attentive to ablution, and remain in-doors for a few days. Dr. Sam asserts that there is no need for alarm under existing circumstances, and regrets the unnecessary anxiety whicli lias been caused by the circulation of such an unfounded statement. Mr Stoney is still under Dr Sam’s medical treatment, and is reported progressing as favourably as circumstances will admit.
