COURTS

POLICE COURT.— Yesterday. [Before Vt. FUASEIi, Esq., R.M.] VIOLENT ASSAULT. John Panes was charged by Sergeant Elliot with violently assaulting Frisso Kotto at Tararu, on the 21st instant. The accused said he acted in self-de-fence. Mr Bullen said the injured naan had to be taken in an express cart to the hospital, and was not able to attend. He would therefore ask for a remand until the 29th instant, and if in the meantime the man was able to attend the case could be heard. The R.M. granted the application, and the accused was accordingly remanded.

CARELESS DRIVING. William Weston was charged with careless driving, in being at such a distance from his cart and horse, in Brownstreet, on the lGth instant, as not to have control over the same. Mr Dodd appeared for the accused, who is a young man, aged 19, late in the employ of Mr Godkin, the omnibus proprietor. Mr Dodd said on the day in question the lad was instructed by his master to deliver a letter at Grahnmstown, and got off the box of the omnibus be was driving at the time for a moment at the corner of Albert and Brown streets, to give the letter to a person on the street, when the horses made off, and got on the side-way, and knocked down n barber’s pole in front of Air Madden’s shop, but the master was more to blame than the boy, and had discharged the latter rather than pay expenses. The R.M. said it was a pity the local Courts had not authority to license drivers as well as the vehicle which would tend to prevent useless or incompetent persons being placed in charge. He did not suppose when Mr Godkin told the boy to deliver the letter that lie meant him to get off the box and leave (lie horses to take care of themselves. Mr Dodd said he understood such were Mr Godkin’s express instructions. The R.M. said under the circumstances he would let defendant off with a mitigated penalty of 10s and costs, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. The youth said lie had got no money, and was removed in custody.
