The Assembly refuse-to ratify the Californian Mail Contract. On a division of the Assembly it was thrown out, there being 36 against and 17 for it. The Submarine Cable is still unworkable, there being a break at the Sandal--wood Islands, between Timor and Darwin, There are 50 acceptances for the Melbourne Cup. The Land Bill has been read a second time. The Hon. J. O’Shannassy has been reelected to the Upper House. The Town Hall Organ has been inaugurated. by a series of charity concerts. The great case, Graham v. Graham has been decided in favour of the plaintiff as sons next of kin A heavy fall of snow took place on the night of the 9th. The Rev Duncan Fraser has been acquitted by the Presbyterians of the chargeß brought against him. A man has been found dead in the Treasury Gardens. Papers found on him prove him to be C. W. Howard, and he had a book of the Band of Friendship Lodge, in the Otago District. Two ladies have passed the matriculation examination at the University—one with honors. The Zephyr arrived on the 9th from Hokitika, and the Centaur from Timaru, on the 13th. Sailed : On the 13th, Sarah Mary, for Greymouth. Mauritius news states that tire Bulwark from London to Auckland, put in badly damaged by heavy weather. New Zealand wheat, 7s ; and 5,000 mats of Java sugar have been bought for shipment to Auckland. Wheat, 7s 3d ; oats in request at 3s 6d. The Wonga Wonga arrived from Sydney on the 13th. The Baroda sailed this morning with 99,0000 z of gold. Tenders have been accepted for 28 miles of new railway. Captain Snee goes home in the Somersetshire to perfect himself in gunnery. The small-pox is completely stanched out. SYDNEY. The new Prince of Wales Theatre opens on the 24th. At a meeting of the Racing Club the motion abolishing declarations to win was rejected. The Australian Wesleyan Church Mission report that the whole expenses of the Branch Society has been met by the local receipts. The Assembly have decided to increase the paid Artillery Force. Trade is satisfactory. Sugars are in great demand. Holders firm. Latest Mauritius advices state that no sugars are offering, and freights are dull. The Parliament will meet again in October. Tenders have been called for, for a Monthly Californian Mail Service. Vessels must be of 1,500 tons, and the passage must be made in 30 days via Fiji and Honolulu. The service to be commenced in July next. The yield of gold shows a steady increase. Lang has been elected Moderator of the Synod. The Hero has been admitted to Pratique. Diamonds have been found in the Bathurst district. At the Balmain Regatta the £2OO prize for the champion race has been altered to £SOO, so as to pay the expenses of each of the representative crews. Steps are being taken to have the colony represented at the London Exhibition. Snow has fallen in the Southern districts. On Thursday, the 15th, a miner named Spencer committed a wilful murder of Charles Cross at Ophir. Michael Leonards, one of two brothers, has been stabbed by a lunatic at Goulbourne and died of his wounds. The markets are quiet. ADELAIDE. The Government has undertaken the exploration of the country on the east and west side of the Telegraph department. Patwain, the driver, has recovered things wrecked 20 years ago. The new issue of the Bank of Adelaide shares have sold at two nine premium. Snow fell on the night of the 9th. It is expected that the Glenelg Railway will be opened next summer for traffic. A company is in the course of formation to grow sugar and spice in the Northern territory. TASMANIA. The Assembly refused to rescind the want, of confidence motion. The House is to be dissolved.
