COROMANDEL.
[From Saturday’s Mail.'] We are glad to notice very evident signs of the progress of steady mining enterprise on this goldfield. The Golconda and Golden Pah have recently given proof of the value of the Beach claims, whatever may have been the history of the Green Harp. Of the Bismarck and two Tokateas’ we need not speak ; and now we have the Excelsior striking the Tokatea reef, with every appearance of a good lode, while the Royal Standard and Royal Oak are taking out excellent stone from well defined leaders, and the Peep O’Day is producing some as fine stone as has been as yet seen in the district. Other claims are steadily working, and many of them will, doubtless, in time, come to the front. If public confidence in Coromandel mines, which fell to zero when the Green Harp bubble burst, and is now rising again, would stand steadily at temperate, instead of rising to fever beat, and ending in another scrip collapse, we should soon see a marked change in the district. While scrip in unworked mines reinaius very propeily a drug upon the market there is every reason for the encouragement of steady prosecution c" work in those mines which, like the above mentioned, have proved their goldbearing qualities, or which from proximity to such claims, inav be fairly entitled to be considered good, and as far as goblfmding calculations can go, safe investments. Yesterday evening, about 7 o’clock, a cry of fire was raised in the upper Ka panga, and on reaehii g the spot where the glare was visible it was found that the shingles of tho bakehouse shed belonging to Mr Fortune had ignited. The fire, however, being speedily discovered, was fortunately put out before it made much headway, and we are happy to state that very trifling damage was the r- suit. The members of the - oromaudel Cricket Club are, we see, about to make arrangements for carrying on tnis favorite old English pastime in the coming season. A meeting of the members of tne C C.C. will be held this afternoon at Boyd’s Hotel, and all those desirous of joining the dub are invited to attend.
The Golconda—The Lynch’s Flat battery is still working on the company s stuff from the numbers one and two leaders. On calling at the battery yesterday afternoon the show looked well for a fair average. During the week 191 oz of hard squeezed amalgam was deposited at the Bank of New Zealand by the general manager, Mr Reeve.
In the Green Harp the contractors for tbe upper level driving 100 feet in the direction of tbe John Bull Gold Mining Company is pushing operations ahead from the face of tbe main level. The country seems to be good driving country, and from the appearance of its face when we were at the mine yesterday we should not be surprised if something good is soon come upon.
Emily.—The retorting from a crushing of 3G tons general stuff only gave the small return of l(Hoz retorted gold. The shareholders will be much disappointed at the result, especially when it is recollected that recently we published an elaborate report from the directors of the mine, which would lead our readers to believe that at least nearly three times the quantity of retorted gold might be expected from such a quantity of stuff as that first put through the battery. The mine manager of the Royal Oak, while continuing operations in the upper level took from the leader yesterday 491 b. of good and picked stone. A parcel was brought down to the office of Mr Douglass yesterday and upon examination shewed gold freely. The stone was taken from the old Little Wonder leader close to where over 1,G40 ounces of good gold was got about eighteen months ago.
