FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
A fatal accident occurred on the Groat South Road, near the junction of the Onehunga and Waikato Railway, on Wednesday evening, about 9 o’clock. It appears • that the deceased, John McCrory, was sitting on the top of the load alongside the driver of the dray, when one of the wheels went over a stone, and the jerk caused thereby threw the unfortunate man off the dray and under the horse’s feet. The driver is not certain whether the wheel went over McCrory or whether the lioise trod upon the deceased’s head. He was, at all events, frightfully disfigured, both jaws being broken, and the nose ; one of the eyes was also bruised out of the socket; his left arm was broken above the elbow. When taken up he was unconscious, aud his brother, who was a little way ahead, driving another dray, took him on to a house at Penrose, at the junction of the Onehunga and Great South Roads, and sent for medical assistance to Onehunga and Otahuliu, aud at the same time went to Otahuhu for a spring cart, to have him conveyed to his father’s house, which is near the Tamaki Bridge. In a short time Drs Elmßley and Zinzau were in attendance, and did all that human skill could do, but without avail. The young man lingered till Thursday, about noon, when death put an end to oia sufferings. He leaves a wife, but no family.— Cross.
