COLLECTION OF WORKS OF ART.
To the Editor of the THAMES Guardian. Sir, —I am desirous to call public attention to the fact that a movement has been set on foot to form a permanent collection of Works of Ait in connection with the Mechanics’ Institute of this place. I have placed my services at the disposal ot the committee ‘ with a view to further this object, and they have been accepte 1. We propose to receive the following either av donations or loans, viz, engravings, photographs, chromolithographs, paintings, or statuary, it being understood only Rpeeimeiis of such exe Ilence are desirable, as will fulfil the object we have in vii-w, which is “ to illustrate the rise and progress «»f art as shown in the various great schools.'’ This I may remark is a branch of culture in which we, as a coin nunity, are far Is - hind otheis in tins colonies ; and whil - on he sister art of music, we from time to time, hear the masterpieces of Handel, Mozart, and oth r great composers, we have no means of making ourselves acquainted with the great masters of painting or sculpture. This state of things, it ip our wish to r m *dy, aR the wonderful reproductions ot works of high merit, which exist, and are constantly being published, make tue best possible substitutes for the original, which many of us may never have an opportunity of seeing. A Fund has been started (for general purposes connected with the collection to supplement the efforts of those willing to promote an interest in art,) for which Messrs M. Hannaford, It. F. Sandes, Spencer and Hall, or the writer, will he glad to receive contributions, and with whom or with the Secretary, at the Mechanics’ Institute, all persons willing to give ns assistance are requested to communicate.—l am, <&x\, Cuarlks F. Lethbridge.
