WHAT IS HOMOEOPATHY ?
A very interesting lecture was delivered on this subject last evening, at the Academy of Music, by Mr (J. W. Sanders. Mr Hudson occupied the chair, and there was a tolerably good attendance, although not so large as we should have expected, considering the prominence which Allopathy v. Homoeopathy has lately occupied in local topics. The lecturer having explained the principle of the treatment of disease on the Homoeopathic system of “ Like cures like ” (similia similibus curantur ), giving instances in support of the soundness of such treatment, such as vaccination for small-pox, &c., proceeded to give a very lucid sketch of his subject, and did our space permit, we should be glad to publish the lecture in full. In conclusion the lecturer said :—“ Iu 1836 cholera, as an awful scourge, visited the City of Vienna, and all the hospitals were fitted up to receive cases indiscriminately as they occurred. One was a homoeopathic hospital, but under the supervision of two allopathic physicians. The authorised report, when the epedcmic had done its work, was—From homoeopathy hospital, 33 per cent.; allopathic hospital, 66 per cent. In 1849 Edinburgh was visited with the pestilence, and the mortality under homoeopathic treatment was 25 per cent.; general mortality, 66 per cent. Liverpool was attacked in the same year—homoeopathy, 25 per cent.; general mortality, 46 per cent.” At the conclusion of the lecture, the Chairman said he was sure all would feel indebted to Mr Sanders for his excellent exposition of homoeopathy, of which he (the Chairman) knew the value, and only regretted that every family on the Thames had not a small homoeopathic medicine chest, with a pamphlet of directions, which, with a little common sense in their use, would alleviate sickness in most cases effectually, and at a far less cost and inconvenience than under the allopathic system. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
