GOLDMINING DISTRICTS ACT, 1871.
We understand that steps will be taken by the > goldfields authorities at Coromandel to compel miners to adhere to the provisions contained in clause No. 6 of the regulations published in the Provincial Gazette of March 21 of the present year, under the Goldmining Districts- Act or 1871. As the language of the clause may affect the working of many claims at Coromandel, we consider it advisable to republish it from the Gazette. The clause reads thus: —“Thera shall be erected and maintained on every claim, in some < conspicuous place near to the entrance to the workings thereof, a board not less than five feet above the ground, on which shall be printed or painted in legible characters (1) the name of claim, (2) the num>er of men’s ground contained in it, (3)< the number of men authorised by the Warden from time to time to hold and work the Bame.” We believe that very little difficulty will be experienced in getting the authority of the proper official to allow less men to work in some claims where operations have been continual and the mine developed, but it is only right that permission should be first obtained before the regulations are contravened.—Gw.
