New Houte to the Pacific Ocean.—A steamer is about to sail from Livei’i>ool, haviug ou board a strong staff of engineers, whose destination will be the confluence of the river Maderia with the river Amazon in South America, at a distance of 1.000 miles from the mouth of the latter, and from this point surveys will be made to determine the feasibility of making the line of railway direct across the continent. It is believed that the saving of time in av tiding the rounding of Cape Horn woul 1 quickly repay any expense incurred iu constructing such a line. Instantanious light-giver.—To obtaiu light instanfly, without the use of matches and without danger of setting anything on fire: —Take an oblong phial of the whitest and purestglass ; put into it a piece of phosphorus about the size of a pea,on which pour some olive oil, heatc-d to the boiling point of water, filling the phial about one third full, aud then fit in an air-tight cork- To use the phial, remove the cork and allow the air to enter, then recork. The whole empty space in the bottle will immediatley l ecome luminous, and the light obtained will be almost as good as that of a lamp. When the light gets weak, admit more air.
