KAUAERANGA HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.
A meeting of the Kauaeranga Highway District Board was held last evening at the office, Sealey-street. Present: Messrs Burgess (in the chair), Lipsey, McCormick, Hollis (Engineer), Lechner (Secretary). Fire Brigade. —An account from Messrs Ireland Bros, for £35 Is 6d was ordered to be paid. It was resolved to hand over the effects, tools, implements, etc., to*the care of the Superintendent of the Brigade, to be kept in good condition, reasonable wear aud tear, accidents, etc., to be taken into consideration.
Accounts. The following accounts were ordered to he paid:—C. Nash, for use of Volunteer Hall, £1 10s; advertising, Guabdian £2 ss, Star £1 16s. An account from J. Quinlivan, street repairs, £4 19s, was 'referred to the Engineer. W. Lloyd, bailiff, £2, serving summonses, ordered to he paid. Hape Road.—A deputation headed by Mr Cribb, waited upon the Board, stating that great injury had been done to the footpath in Hope Road by carts passing over it, and calling attention to the almost impassable stale of the thoroughfare in that locality. ‘The iuhabitantff would guarantee about £4 towards the expense
of making a footpath from Rolleston to Sandes streets.—Mr Stanton said he had about £3 collected and the, work was urgently required.—The Engineer was structed.to visit and report upon the probable cost of the work, etc., and requested the deputation to collect, what money they could on or before Monday next, and the Board would : see what could be done. Pollen-street.— Messrs Rnyson and Morgan waited upon the Board in reference to the footpath on the west side of Pollenstreet. aud a petition was presented praying the Board to pnt the same in repair from Karaka Bridge to Willoughby-street. The petition w&s signed by 30 residents of the locality. The Board instructed the Engineer to report upon the probable cost by Monday next, when the Board would see what could be done. Mr Rayson said lie thought the inhabitants would le willing to meet the Board half-way in the matter.
Tramwayß. —The Chairman said before long the important subject of tramways would come before them, and he thought it would be well of the Board would instruct him to collect all the information lie could upon the matter. He believed as soon as the Bill now before the House of Representatives was passed, that pressure would be brought to bear to have tramways laid down, and he thought this should be done under some rules and regulations properly laid down. He would, if the Board thought fit, write to Sydney and Melbourne, where there were street tramways, for information. The' Board instructed the Chairman to obtain all the information possible on the subject. Valuation. —The following letter from Messrs McKee and Hunter was read : “ Shortland, 12th August, 1872.—Sir,—We have the honour to furnish you with our valuation of this district, tho amount of which is nine hundred and twelve pounds three shillings sterling (£5)12 3s). As may be seen by the accompanying street roll, there are three oi four owners of houses we have been unable to find, and likewise a number of Maori land proprietors, whose names we cannot ascertain ; the former we left blank, the latter we inserted in pencil-marks, from the old street roll.— We are, &c., James McKee, Scott Hunter, C.E., Valuers.—J. Burgess, Esq., Chairman of the Kauaeranga Highway District Board.” The Board then adjourned until Monday next.
