THE GREAT HAWAIIAN VOLCANO.
Im connection with the late eruption at Mount Vesuvius in April last, it may be not uniuterestiug to observe that the Great Volcano of Kllauea, on the slopes of Mouna] Loa in the Island of Hawaii, presented, early in March, (and shortly before the late terrible outbreak of the Great Italian Volcano) symptoms of a singularly correspondent activity. The Uaxoaiin Gazette , published iu the city of Honolulu, on the 20th March, says:—We learu from a gentlemen who recently visited the Volcauo of Kilauea, that dur ing the early part of the present mouth great activity has been shown in the crater. Ou the 4th instant, there were five fire cones in great activity. During the night of the 4th an out-flow of lava from one of the cones occurred, which covered an area of something like a halfmile square. This eruptiou took place between the old South Lake aud the locality knowiLas the Middle Lake. About four o’clock on the afternoon of the 6th our infonnaut crossed this lava-field at considerable peril, the heat being inter se, the fissures in the crust disclosiug the molten lava beneath. This new field of lava completely, broke up at half-past six (hut a short time after our informant had passed over it), a fountain of lava springing up in thecentre, pouriug its fiery torrents in all directions. All attempts to visit the lot.aliiy of the old Salt Lake were unavailing, owing to the sulphurous vapours wuii.ii were quite suffocating. Every appearance at present seems to indicate that Pele is preparing for a grand pyrotechnic display, such as slio cau alone furnish in tiiis world.” We should like to know whether a similar activity lias been manifested elsewhere (auJ about the same time) at the different insular volcanoes in the area of the Pacific.
