MINING.
Caledonian.— We learn on inquiry that for Saturday’s crushing, that is after the the clean op took place, until the battery was stopped at night, equivalent to from one hundred to two hundred ounces of gold was taken, that is amalgam equal to this amount, which has of course not been included in the last week’s return. This it was, no doubt, that gave rise to the rumour in town yesterday, that part of the returns had been kept back, which is not the case, as cleaning up always takes place on Saturday morning, and whatever accrues after tha<, must go into the next week’s yield. The tailings from the specimens were not treated either, nor a lot of mundic which was taken off the tables, and doubtless these will prove rich. The gold from part of the stone last week was very fine indeed, and the manager has determined to have a parcel of the tailings tested at once in order to see if the gold has escaped into them in any quantities. The quantity of stone crushed last week was one hundred and fifty tons from the No. 2 block, which is but poor now, very little gold being visible in it, and 150 tons from the intermediate level which gave the principal amount of the seven hundred ounces. Be sides this there was five and a half hundredweight of specimens, half of which were very good, and the remainder fair, and some hundred weights of picked stone, so that on the whole die return is a good one, thou eh not what was expected. Yesterday morning a splendid lot of gold was come on in the (jtago run, as it is called. About three hundred pounds of stone were brought up, which is decidedly the best by far that has been taken from the mine, for a long time past. Some of the stones were exceedingly rich, and all were good specimen stuff. A quantity of small loose dirt, also rich, was bjgged and sent away to the mill for immediate treatment. Tinstone was taken from the lode about fourteen feet above the level of the floor of the drive, and more gold was to be seen, but was nor broken out, as a block of the reef had to be broken down before any more work could be done in that direction. The Rtones were much iarg.-r, and altogether more solid looking toan what has hitherto been found in this lode, and lias more the appearance of a heavy deposit. More good stone may be expeettd up this morning. The manager has let contracts for breaking down the reef on both sides of the No. 1 winze, where the specimens were obtained last week, arid this work will be pushed ahead as quickly as
possible. No change of any momerit h’aa as yet taken place in the lower level drive, but the face looks very well, the_gj-£.und being excellent. Stock, which suffered a great depression in the morning, rallied in the evening, and rose £rom £27, at which they were sold to £33. Golden Calf. —An inspection of lode in this mine has proved very satisfactory. The lode, which is somewhere about eight feet thick altogether, being worked on the hanging wall, the prospects are very good. A quantity of p3 r rites and antimony is to be seen in the stone near to the hanging wall, and gold is also visible in the Bolid stoue in the reef, in nice little patches. In general appearance the lode is very similar to the Cure reef, although no copper is to bo seen at present. They are working on the lode now going southward, and the manager is about to have a crushing of some thirty or forty tons at the Tramway Battery, for which purpose he is bagging the stono below and forwarding it to the mill. Some very nice stone showing gold very freely, in fact the}' may be termed specimens, are in hand, and from all appearance there is no doubt in the world but that the stono will
prove highly payable, and the reef seems to be improving as it is opened on, autimony and other metals coming in, in larger quantities. The reef underlies flatly, at about a dip of thirty degrees or so, and has a very well defined hanging wall.
Inverness. —The lode in the stopes above the beach level is certainly looking very well, and is improving as it is opened out on. The lode itself is over four feet from wall to wall, but the crush-
ing stone is a vein of from a foot to nearly two feet thick, which has been hugging the foot wall for some distance. On the hanging wall is a small goldbearing vein about two inches thick, and between the two the lode is composed of mullock, interspersed with stringers. It looks at present as if the foot wall vein were coming round and tending towards the hanging wall, and they are expected to join at a short distance ahead, when something even better than at present is expected. Gold can be seen in the stone whenever it is broken down, and the crushing which has taken place at Goodah’s proves it to bo more than payable. The lode in the lower workings below the beach tunnel is still lookiug well and turning out payable stone, which is being operated on at the battery. Don Pedro. —ln breaking down stone again yesterday, a little geld was seen, and the lode generally looks well. Moanataiari. —Driving the cross-cut for the No. 9 lode has been discontinued, and they have started to open out on the lode in hand. About two feet of this were broken down yesterday morning, and a little gold was seen in some of it. It is certain that something well worth working on has been found here, aud it will most iikely also prove of value to other claims lower down the hill, the cross-cut not being more than sixty feet from the Inverness Company’s ground, towards which the lode strikes. In the other cross-cuts, no change has as j'et taken place. They are all in good working ground, aud getting in rapidly, and the same may be said of the main tunnel.
Imperial Crown Tribute. — l’he tributes who are working the Golden Hill portion of this company’s ground are now having a crushing at the Karanui Battery.
file stoue is taken from the continuation of the Duke of Magenta leader, which is about a foot thick, and is in good working country. About forty tons are to be crtfcdied, and a yield of two ounces to the ton is exoected.
Grigg’s (Tookey) Tribute. —A crushing of between thiity aud forty tons of stone is now going on at Goodall’s Battery for this'tribute party. Six head of stampers are at work. Poverty and Charleston (Albion) Tribute. —The general stuff- crushed for these tributers at the Kuranui gave a yield of thirty ounces of gold, and this added to the eighty ounces obtained from the specimens, gives a total return of one huudred and nine ounces eleven pennyweights of melted gold—a capital yield, hough not up to those of previous months.
Another crushing will, however, shortly be started.
Victory (late Colleen Bawn). — A crushing of a parcel of stone from this mine, on the Karaka Creek, has given a yield of twenty-five ounces eleven pennyweights of melted gold.
Inglewood. —The shareholders of this claim have lodged a small parcel of one ounce two pennyweights of melted gold in the Bank of New Zealand. --
Waitemata. —On Saturday a clean up of the plates and tables gave a return of eighty-one ounces of hard squeezed amalgam, after from eighteen to twenty tons of stone had been put through. This we must call very satisfactory indeed, and looks well for a good return from the crushing.
Windsor Castle. — On Saturday the leading drive in the intermediate level came into good country, and the lode, improved greatly, showing some very good gold indeed. The manager is of opinion that ho has come upon another shot of gold, as this he expected to do somewhere in this direction. The stuff is being sent down to the battery, where crushing will be resumed to-morrow, probably, if not to-day. As soon as the drive is a little further in, and the stopes reach the line of the shot, we will be enabled to judge better as to its quality and value.
Yankee Doodle. —A meeting of the directors was held yesterday afternoon, at which tenders for working the company’s ground on tribute were received. After opening them, it was determined to let the mine on tribute to Welsh and party for a period of twelve mouths. All Nations. —The gold resulting from the past lour weeks’ crushing at the Herald Battery was yesterday lodged a .d melted, and amounted to only one hundred an J ninety-seven ounces eight pennyweights twelve grains of gold. i'Ue return is mueu smaller tlian was anticipated. Red White and Blue.—A crushing for Webb’s tnuute par,y in tins mine is going on at tiouter’s Battery, and is showing up for a yield of about half an ounce to the ton. North Star. —The tributers who have been for so long working in tliia mine trying to get in to meet the winze have at last succeeded in so doing, iiaviug broken through yesterday, and allowed tlie wut r to drain off. Work will be started on the lode at ouce.
