MONUMENT TO VOLUNTEERS AND SETTLERS.
To the Editor of the thamks Guardian. Sir, —Knowing the interest you take in the Volunteer Force, I hope you will kindly allow me space for the following, especially as the war against the rebel Maoris seems to be at an end now, viz., to raise a national monument to the memory of the brave patriots who have died defending the hearths and homes of us settlers in New Zealand, and in upholding the dignity of law and order. I think, sir, that this is a time most favourable for tlie above, especially as I perceive the members of the Navy are taking means to raise a memorial to their hate comrades who fell in action in New Zealand. The memorial I propose we should erect is one to the memoiy of the almost unknown and forgotten dead, late of the Imperial Army and Colonial Forces ; and surd}' this will he but a small recognition of the sacrifice incurred by them. And as to the place where it should bo erected, that could be settled by a joint committee representing the interests of the two islands (North and South). Trusting this will meet with the approval of all, Volunteers and settlers.— I am, &c., J.N.S. Grahamstown, July 27, 1872.
