FOOTBALL

A FOOTBALL MATCH was played at Shortland on Saturday between the members of the Thames Football Club. The sides consisted on the one part of members belonging to the Grahamstown end, and on the other of Shortland men. The game was started with eleven on each side, and was well contested for more than two hours, during which time neither side succeeded in kicking a goal, though there were several near “ shaves.” Duulevie, on the Grahamstown side, very nearly succeeded in getting a game more than once, and was well backed up by FitzMorris, Holland, Gudgeon, and others. On the other siue, Donovan, Williams, Woon, and Crawford were playing hard all through, and once the first named very nearly had scored a game, but a leg was in the way, and the ball was sent back whence it came. Rain coming on prevented the match being played until dark, as it would otherwise have been. It was resolved, after the game was concluded, that the “ Club” should issue a challenge to play any fifteen men on the Thames against an equal number from amongst their members. We hope that the challenge will be accepted, as it will serve to show what the Club are capable of doing against strangers.
