SHORTLAND FIRE RELIEF FUND COMMITTEE.

A GENERAL meeting of the Shorland Fire Relief Fund Committee was held last evening at Butt’s Hotel. Present:—-Mr Macoonald (in the chair), and Messrs Grove,Gibbons, Butt, Power,Cox, Stewart, Garrett, Williams. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer read a report from tho Secretary of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, acknowledging the receipt of £l2 from the sub-committee, of which £lO 14« had been.expended in assisting urgent cases, and the balance returned to the committee. The Treasurer stated that he had iu hand £62 10s, and there were several lists to come in. He had placed £42 iu tho bank. Mr Williams said on his and Mr Lipsey’s list there was £44 2s fid in hand, and more promised. 'The report of the sub-committeo was read, stating that they had heard the statements of the sufferers, with their estimates of losses sustained (these were published in our issue of Monday last), and had drawn up a statement of the committee’s estimate of those losses in buildings and gooc’s. A letter was read from Mr Evans, artist in hair, statiug that Mrs Harrison’s statement as to her losses (which has been already published) was incorrect and much exaggerated, and that her statement as to being without means tv as untrue, and also that what she said relative to a lot of wooden balls being missing from the alley was not correct; and further, that what she said in reference to the ownership of the furniture in Evans’ place was untrue. The Chairman said lie had previously observed that the Committee was not called for the purpose of inquiring into origin of the lire, but he had sent the minutes of the evidence taken on Saturday to M Bullen for information. Mr Ev ns’ letter was received, and placed iu the hands of the Secretary with the other documents.

The Chairman said considering the very bad slate of the weather, he would put it lo the meeting as a matter of courtesy to those who were absent, he would suggest to the meeting that it might be well to adjourn to a future day. A motion by Mr Grove to adjourn until Friday (in consequence of the bad state of the weather, and the consequent thinness of the attendance) was carried. A vote of thanks io the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
