POLICE COURT.— Yesterday.

[Before W. Frasck, Esq., R.M.] DRUNKENNESS. Horace Bark-r was fined 10s with the alternative of 24 hours’ imprisonment for being drunk. Peter MoEvoy, charged with being drunk, and also with making use of obscene language, was fined 20s or 48 hours’ imprisonment for being drunk, and was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment for the latter otfeuce. obtaining money by false pretences. 'fhoinas Audley was brought up by warrant charged with obtaining the sum of one pound by false pretences, ou the Ist April last, from Alexander Gillon, of Grahamstown. Mr Tyler appeared for defendant. Mr Bulleu applied for a remand, as the accused had only been apprehended the previous day, and the witnesses for the prosecution were not ready. Mr Tyler said he should offer no objection to the remand, but asked the R.M. to take hail, which his Worship consented to do, the accused in i£2s, aud one surety of a like amount. The required bail was procured, and the accused stauds remanded until to-day. CHIMNEY ON FIRE. D. Poole was charged with permitting the chimney of the house occupied by him, aud known as the “ Ballarat Pie House,” in Brown-street, Grahamstown, to cateh fire on tho 18th iust The defendant pleaded guilty, and said the occurrence was quite accidental, adding that the bricklayers who built the chimney had made it rather narrower than it ought to have been. The R.M. fined the defendant 10s and costs. REMOVING SURFACE SOIL. Charles Matthews and Daniel Taylor were charged with unlawfully removing the surface soil from the carriage road in Paliau street, without the permission of the local authorities. Mr Tyler appeared for the defendants, and pleaded not guilty. John Jervis stated that he lived in Pahau-streel, near Ivaraka Bridge. Ou the 19th inst. the defendants were carting stuff from the creek. He did not see them himself removing the surface soil from Pahau-street. P. F. Martinson, chemist, Pollen-street, stated that Pollen-street adjoins his property. It is at the boundary of Grahamstown aud Shortlaud; cannot say to which Board it belongs. Has not paid rates to either. The old bed of tho Karaka Creek was the boundary, hut it has been altered, fcjaw three men with a dray removing soil. One man was standing by the dray. Could not say which it was. Did not take his photograph. Both defendants were discharged. TRANSFERS OF PUBLICANS* LICENCES. The following applications were granted : From Louis Elirenfried to Adam Orr, Ancient Briton Hotel, Grahaiustowo. Prom Adam Urr to Catherine ..cDerniott, Donegal Arms Hotel, Grahamstown.
