KAUAERANGA HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.
A meeting of the Kauaeranga Highway Distinct Board was held last evening at the <fiice, Pollen-street. Present : Mr Burgess, in the chair, and Messrs Lipsey, McCormick, Scott, Jones, Hollis (engineer). Leclmer (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read nnd confirmed. MrJ. Brown made a complaint to the Board of the state of the pathway in Baillie-streit, and requested to be allowed to make use of Borne stones lying in Willoughbv-street for the purpose of repairs. 'The Board granted the permission sought to be obtained. In reference to the cheque for £BB, for which there were not sufficient funds, the Chairman stated that lie had burned it in the presence of two members of the Board.
nvKRPRAFT. —The Chairman said he had S'-en Mr Mnriay in reference to the overdraft of £SOO, and that he had requeued him (the Chairman) to make a formal application in writing, which had been done, and an answer might be daily expected from the directors in Auckland. Valuation. —The Chairman said the valuers were at work, and he thought it would be well if the Board would appoint some one to see that the work was completely and satisfactorily done. To-day two errors had been discovered in the former valuation. It was resolved to have the work checked.
Accounts, etc. —The Chairman said it was very little use going info the accounts until the overdraft was arranged, as there was only £2B in the Bank.—The Secretary was instructed to write to the Superintendent asking for payment of another instalment of the grant in aid. Fire Bbigade. —Mr R. Scott, jun., sent in a list of requisites which would be required for the Shorthuid Volunteer Fire Brigade, viz., 2 hydrants, 12 lengths of hose, 2 branches, 25 hose keys, 25 bells with rings for keys, 50 feet of rop.j with hook, buckets, ladders, blanket smocks, shed is some convenient place, fire plugs in Pollen-slreet. at the corner of Wil loughhy-street, Richmond-street, Sealeystreet. Mary-street, Karaka Bridge, Rul-leston-street, Mary-street, Rolleston and -Sealy-stre-t, and one between eacit of tlie above. The cost of these was roughly estimated at £2oo.—The Chairman sanl it would be desirable lo have a Fire Rate Act passed similar to the Grahamstown Act.—it was resolved to call a meeting on the subject at the Volunteer Hall, on Thursday evening next. Municipality.— The Chairman suggested that this Board should ltold'a conference with the VVaiotahi Board ami the Municipal ty Committee, in reference to this subject. He thought no steps should be taken without consulting the Municipality Committee (which represented the public on the subject), and the Waiotahi Board, and that the latter be communicated witli. This was agreed to oil the motion of Mr Lipsey, seconded by Mr Jones, Mr McCormick dissenting, and proposing an amendment which, however, was not seconded and fell to the ground. He did not think the people had expressed themselves upon the question, and lie thought they should be first consulted. Repairs of Roads.— The Engiueersaid he had visited the Karaka Road, and found much of it in a very bad state. He had given instructions for a trench to be cut to let off the wafer.—The Chairman suggested that the Engineer should hire a horse and cart, and put on the two men employed by the Board to till up some of tiie worst holes, so as to keep the traffic open.—The Engineer said the inhabitants were willing to contribute £ls if the Beard would subsidise.—Mr Lipsey said Hape Road and Pollen-strei t required something being done to them very milch and had been much neglected.—The Engineer said the broken metal was not of uniform size*, but of all shapes and sizes, and would never make a good road. Ho would recommend the mud to be scraped off, and the surface to he as little disturbed as possible.—lt was stated that Mr Quinlivau had some broken metal, ami it was agreed to make an arrangement with him to supply a quantity to fill up the worst holes in Pollen-street.— L’he Engineer recommended that some shingle should be got if it could be obtained, and the Board resolved to see if some could not he obtained, the Engineer stating that in his opinion it would be the means of saving many hundred pounds.
