Per New Zealand Press Association. SUPREME COURT.—WARDROP v. COOPER': VERDICT FOI. PRA.IN HFP £SUO. TRIAL GREEN HARP CASE. >IMPORTANT 10 BERDAN OWNERS.—SEVERE EXPRESSION OF OPINION AT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE]* AUCKLAND. In the Supreme Court, in the case of Wardropv. Cooper, a share-transaction case, a verdict for plaintiff vvas given | on all issues. Damages for amount claimed, £SOO. In the Police Court the charge against Sheehy, mine mana rer of the Green Harp, Coromandel, was partly heard. The legal manager, Bennett, was the chief witness. He deposed to liavi g seen rich specimens taken from the mine which had not been crushed. Sheehy had stated that the specimens had been put through with the general stuff. The battery manager deposed that he did not see any specimens crushed. The case was adjourned.
The attention of the members of the Chamber of Commerce was drawn to the system of mine management. Mr Shera ascribed the. poor returns to the existence of private berdans, where stolen specimens were crushed secretly, and legitimate shareholders victimized. He thought that such establishments should he licensed, and also placed under the supervision of the police, and that the owners be compelled to furnish accurate returns of the amount of stone crushed, whence obtained, and the yield. Mr Rattray thought the private berdans were nests of robbery, and not a steamer left the Thames without conveying quantities of gold obtained from private berdans. The Chamber of Commerce resolved to urge the Government to pass a licensing on crushing machines.
A ‘ Provincial Government Gazette ’ published to-day defines the boundaries of the Tararu Highway District. The meeting of the Green Harp shareholders lapsed for want of a quorum.
