A STORY OF A KISS.
The following little episode has just occurred at the Imperial Opera House it* Vienna. In Lortzing’s Waffenschmied t there is a scene where Count Libenan (Herr Neumann) has to kiss Innentraut, (Mdlle. Gindele). The kissing cannot be omitted, because in the two following scenes the conversation is continually turning upon it. Alter Innentraut has commanded the Count to kiss first her right and then her left hand, she winds up by saying, “and now the lips.” Herr Neumann gave Mdlle. Gindele, at the first performance, the kiss specified in the stage directions. The lady was so incensed that she complained to tho *' management. She declared she felt insulted in her honour as a woman, and that, if she could not obtain reparation from the management, sho would seek it from the law. Several days elapsed, and the affair was a fruitful topic of conversation. At length the Waffenschmied was again put up. All the initiated were very curious to knowhow the kiss scene would go off. After Couut. Liebeuan had kissed Irmentraut’s right and left hand, the lady said ; “ There, 1 will not trouble you for tin- kiss on the lips.” Hi-rr Neuman thereupon quickly replied : “ riniiik heaven thiil I have riot to kits that fright.” M-ille. Gindele became so excited that sin- had to he carried in a faint tig state to her room. She has again complained to llie management. Stage jurists are deeply interested in the matter.
