MINING.

Red White and Blue.—A crushing of about fifty tons for Webb Brothers’ tribute in this mine has been finished at Souter’s, but the result is not to hand y 7 et. Shamrock. —The crushing of thirty tons of stone for this company 7 was completed on Thursday, and gave an excellent return of fifty-two ounces nineteen pennyweights of melted gold. The care that requires to be exercised in crushing this stone is manifested by the fact that ninety ounces of amalgam were taken from the tables and ripples, whereas the berdans gave no less than one hundred and fifty ounces. This is accounted for by 7 the iaet of there being such a quantity of base metal in the stone.

Lincoln* Castle. A parcel of four ounce* twelve pennyweights twelve grains of melted gold was lodged yesterday by this company, as the resylt of a small parcel of stone crushed by vhem. Imperial Crown. —The trial from the reef on the seaward side of the slide has yielded hut poorly. About eight or nine tons were crushed altogether, and the result was one ounce four pennyweights three grains of melted gold, or about three pennyweights to the tou.

Sons of Freedom. —The main winze is now down lo a depth of seventy-five feet, and the lode has shown gold all the way down, except for the last few feet. This is, however, accounted for by the fact that there is a split in the reef, and one portion of it only is now in hand. A little deeper, no doubt, it will make again, being now two feet thick. Good air is still found at the bottom, the manager having opened out a drive above in such a manner as to keep up a constant draught. Driving along the lode is being continued, and gold can now be seen in thestone as itcomes out. The reef is very large, the footwall not being in hand in the drive, so that it is at least five feet thick where now worked. The crushing at Souter’s Battery is looking a little better than the last, and will be kept up for some time to come, there being about one hundred tons of dirt still on hand, and more coming out every day now. 4

Bank of New Zealand.— The tributers who took up a portion of the ground lately have had a c rushing of twelve tons of stone at Weston’s Battery from the new leader opened out in the old Monarch ground. The result was a very good one indeed, amounting to forty-one ounces nineteen penny weig-hts of melted gold, or at the'rate of three and a half ounces to the ton. This is most satisfactory, and also encouraging. Laura- —The main low level adit lias been now pushed in for a distance of one hundred and forty-five feet, and a change has taken place in the nature of the country for the better within the last few feet. Quartz stringers have been passed through, one of which is as much as two inches thick, and is full of metal. An increase in the quantity of water coining in has also taken place, which is likewise a favourable indication.

Loyalty. —A meeting of the directors of this company lias been held, at which it was resolved to proceed to work the ground without any delay. For this purpose, a call of one shilling per share lias been made. The company’s ground is very favourably situated, nearly all on Block 27, fronting the Karaka Creek. In order to work more economically, the directors have very sensibly agreed to unite with their next-door m ighbours, Pullman’s Lease, and put in a mam low level drive along the boundary of the two claims, from which both companies can work the ground to advantage. Windsor Castle.— The battery lias been stopped for some days, but was started again yesterday. The delay was occasioned, not by want of stone, but some repairs were found necessary to the machinery. The news from the mine is favourable. There is a good strong lode in hand in the slopes, in which gold can be seen every now ai:d then, and better returns are looked for.

Point Russell. —The stone now being crushed at the Knranui comes from the main reef between the upper and lower levels, and will, we tlihik, prove payable, as from the size of the lode and the facilities for working a return of fifteen pennyweights to the ton will pay. There is a very large section of the reef between the two levels to be taken out. These levels are connected by a winze from which the stopes have been started. The lode is throughout some five feet thick, but portions of it are broken, and care is required in picking the stuff-for crushing. Close to the footwall is a vein of nice quartz some fifteen inches (hick, find this is decidedly the best part of the lode, specimens being found in it every now and then. The claim stands in a first-rate position, and when the Knranui tunnel gets into the ground, as it will probably do ere long now, there will be an immense block of country to work at, from which good returns may naturally be expected.

Waithmata.—Work in this mine is proceeding Satisfactorily, and both the leaders worked on continue to show lip very well and give good prospects.
