COURTS.

POLICE COURT.— Yesterday. [Before \V. FRASER, Esq., K.M.] THE LATE AFFRAY AT HIKUTAIA. assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Wiroinu Ivaraka was charged with assaulting Lachlan Allan MoCaskill at Ilikutaia, on the Ist instant, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Mr J. C. Young acted as interpreter. When the case was called on, Mr McGaskill, the complainant, did not appear. Mr sub-inspector Bulieu said lie had received a telegram from Mr McCaskiil (who is in Auckland) on Saturday, stating that ho wished to witlid'-aw proceedings against the native. Previous to that lie understood that Mr McCaskiil had engaged counsel for the prosecution. A letter had also been received from Mr Macdonald, solicitor, staling that Mr McCaskiil wished the case to be withdrawn, lie (Mr Bullcn) should not offer any opposition.

In reply to tbe Bench, the accused said he had received no intimation from Mr McCaskiil of the intended withdrawal of the charge, but Mr Puckey had informed him that such was the case. He wished for his expenses, as he had been detained here in consequence of the cliaigo. The 11. M. said tbe case was withdrawn, and oidored it to be struck out of the lisv. The accused was then discharged from custody.
