KAUAERANGA HIGHWAV DISTRICT BOARD.
A meeting of the Kauaeranga Highway District Board was held last evening. Present: —Messrs Burgess (in the chair), Wallnutt, Mills, Scott, Cameron (Engineer), Perston (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman said several summonses had been taken out and two had been served against native owners, who were in arrears of rates. The agent employed, lie thought, had been rather dilatory in tho matter.
In reference to a letter from Mr Lloyd, bailiff, asking for remuneration, it was resolved to pay part, and let the remainder stand over for the present. The Chairman said, as the Superintendent had determined to cut off a portion of the district south of the Ilape Creek, he had instructed Mr Buscke not to go on with that part of the plan until the alteration of the boundaries was proclaimed. Mr Thackeray, contractor, waited upon the. Board, asking, in the first place, for money, and in the second for the Board to take into consideration the extra work and labour which he had been compelled to undertake in carrying out his contract, for works in Sealey-street, and to allow him something extra. The Board agreed to take the matter into consideration.
FINANCE. Tbe funds on hand to the credit of the Board were stated to be £156 3s Bd. SHALEY STREET. The Chairman said it was no use goingon with the metalling on Sealey-street in the present state of the weather. Mr Mills said perhaps an arrangement could he made for Mr Thackeray to leave his tramway there, otherwise the traffic would be stopped. Mr Scott said there was another means of access to the locality’ for carts by Hill street. It was resolved to discuss the question further at next meeting. RICIIMOND-STEKET. Two residents from Richmond-strcet waited upon the Board, asking the Board to do something to render the footpath in this street passable. A few loads of metal they urged was urgently’ required. It was resolved that a quantity of metal not exceeding 8 loads, should be devoted to the purpose. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. It was resolved to hold tbe annual ge. neral meeting of ratepayers at 2 o’clock p.m, at the Volunteer Hotel, on Tuesday the 9th July, and to advertise this in the local papers alternately. LABOR. Mr Scott said there were several complaints, whether true or false lie could not say, that the laborers employed kept “ loafing” away their time a good deal. Mr Cameron said lie did not think the complaints were well founded, but he had been away for a week, and could not say’ what they’ had been doing during that time. The Chairman said he had endeavoured to find the men, but could not. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £B9 2s were ordered to be paid. The meeting then adjourned until Friday next ct 6 p.m.
