The s.s. ‘ Alhambra’ arrived from Melbourne this morning. She left on the 15th instant, and sails for Dunedin tonight. She brings the following passengers for Dunedin : Mrs Montrose and child, Rev. G. Sutherland, J. Dunn, Mr Mailer, Mr Jack, Rev. A. L. Foster, Mr Richardson, Mr Mitchell, Mrs Smith, Mr Humphries, Mr J. Smith, Mr Wrigley, and 18 in the steerage. MELBOURNE. June 15. The new ministry has been sworn in. Mr Francis Premier, Mr Langton Treasurer, Mr Cohen Commissioner of Customs, Mr Casey Commissioner of Lands, Mr Mackay Minister of Mines, Mr Gillies Commissioner of Railways, Mr Kerford Solicitor General, Mr Stephens Attorney General, and Mr Ramsay a portfolio without pay. The probable re-election is opposed, and is very doubtful.

A Bill has been introduced in the Assembly to prevent the spreading of the foot and mouth disease, and passed. Numbers of sheep have been destroyed under orders. The proposition to form a company to organise an establishment for breeding horses for the Indian market does not meet with much favor. Six prisoners, including Captain Mowrie or Scott, the Egerton Bank robber escaped from Ballarat gaol. Two were recaptured. In the libel action by G. P. Smith, barrister, against the ‘Daily Telegraph,’ the jury could not agree. There will be a new trial next session. At the Mint operations were commenced with ninety-five thou sand pounds worth of gold. An exconstable named Murphy attempted to murder Inspector Ximenes. A destructive fire happened at Malmesbury. Diptlieria and Scarlatina are prevalent. Many deaths amongst children have occurred. A reward of £SO each has been offered for the apprehension of the Ballarat Gaol breakers. SYDNEY, June 15. The Government appears to have a good working majority. A deputation from the Chamber ol Commerce had an interview with the Government with reference to direct Californian postal communication. Mr Parlies considered it advisable to build ships specially for the line. Shippmg.—Arrived Magellan Cloud and Lady Bird from New Zealand. Commercial.—Wheat firm at 6s. The wool sales show a slight decline in

price. The Telegraph Copyright Bill has been read a first time. News from Fiji shows that there have been political party disturbances. Thurston, the new Premier, proposes to remodel the constitution. Clanckey, a photographer, one of the passengers in the wrecked steamer Clarence, lost his road after leaving the steamer, and was found dead in the bush. A letter has been received, stating positively that the crew and Polynesian labourers, wrecked in the Mary Campbell, reached Tanna in safety. The new Governor, Mr Hercules Robinson, is sight-seeing. The gold returns for the past four months are 75 per cent, more than for the corresponding period of last year. The second reading of the Divorce Bill is under discussion. The steamer Pelican ran down a boat in the harbour; one man tvas drowned.

John Davies, proprietor of the ‘ Hobarton Mercury,’ died suddenly of serous apoplexy.
