COROMANDEL MINING NEWS
(FROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT.) The Bismarck are opening out on tins opposite side of the winze from where all the specimens had been taken lately. As they had only just commenced, no results may be looked for a day or two. The Golden Point have just cut Scotty’s leader, with a little gold in it, and are timbering up and are cutting out a paddock to receive the quartz. The Scotty's Hill are continuing their cross-drive with good prospects. Specimens are being taken from the leader, and a fair show of gold is to he seen in 1 the general stuff. j Von Teinpsky : This company, appear . to have cut an old watercourse in their ! tunnel. They have gone through about | eight feet of immense watenvorn boulders | and sand, packed closely together, withi out any sign of its terminating. ihe j manager states that he will not be able to ! continue without blasting, as the boulders j are becoming too large to get out with a I pick.
The Carnatic continue to carry forward their level through good country. It is now in over 80 feeß At 100 feet tlie manager proposes opening out on both sides to intersect the known leaders from the Tokatea range. The Buffalo: Until the last day or two this company have been following their specimen leader with good results : hut, in consequence of the men leaving for Australia, the manager was deficient of hands. He expects, however, to he in full woik again to-morrow. The lower level is now in 30 feet, and will he pushed on vigorously to intersect the leader cut |on the surface. In the paddock there are now about 20 tons of quartz ready for I crushing, but as tiie Governin'nt have done nothing more to the road they commenced to cut some time ago, it may he concluded that crushing will not take place very early. I Court House Creek have extended their I level S 3 feet and strange to say also have j immense water-worn boulders in the face j of the drive, looking just like a reef, upon ; which a heavy stream of water had acted j for ages. The supposition is, that this I was originally the course of the creek | mid that a heavy land slip diverted it. Blasting will he resorted to t o remove them. In driving numbers of small stringers were cut, showing a good colour. Moore’s Lease still continue their crosscut from the lower level, carrying the leader in with them. Very little progress is made however, owing to their only having one shift on. In the upper level stoping out is being carried on from the winze put up on the fiat leader, with very fair prospects. The provincial finished their contract of GO feet, and are wailing to have it passed before resuming work again. The Old Sticking have their tunnel in about 35 feet. Several stringers have 1 ecu crossed, with a little gold in them. It is expected they will come upon the leader from which the surtacc gold is supposed to have come, in 20 feet further driving. The Murphy’s Hill : This company have opened out on both sides of the lea lor cut at face of drive, 275 feet in, some tune hack. The stone looks very promising, and a little gold is seen in washing. The Ophir have just conic upon a leader two feel through, 80 teet in. A trial crushing at the Providence Battery, on the creek, will be commenced and finished to-day. Great hopes are entertained that it will yield fairly. It is proposed to carry the main upper level in 150 feet further, and also to follow the leader at the same time. At 230 feet, cross-cuts will then he put in to intersect the leader supposed to have thrown the gold found in the blind gully. On the lower level the eros-cut will be put in at 130 feet, for the purpose of cutting surface leaders. The Lady Bowen have put their tunnel in 10G feet to cut a reef visible on the surface, traversing the whole ground, and crossing Sykes’ Creek. I his contract being finished, we boa a new one is to he let at once.
The Canadian : A contract for 100 feet of lower level has been let; 25 feet of it is already finished. The upper level has been taken in lOOfeet, and various st ringers cut, hut not the leader they have been looking for, which they expect to get in lower level. TUB LATEST FIN’D. Some excitement has been caused by the news that gold had been struck on the Waikoinoriko Creek, somewhere in the neighbourhood of Kennedy’s Bay. Upon inquiry, I ascertained that a prospecting party, formed some time ago by a few persons here, had brought in some specimens and loose gold, obtained from washing a dish of stuff. My informant —one of the shareholders, whose word may he relied on—estimates the loose gold to he about lGdwt., not by any means a had prospect from a dish ! A share was disposed of for 50 Goleondas within my own knowledge.
