BISHOP MORAN ON THE LIFE OF THE LATE BISHOP VIARD.
The following sketch of the life of the late Bishop was delivered on the occasion of his funeral sermon by Bishop Moran, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Wellington : “ Bishop Moran then mounted the pulpit and delivered a most impressive sermon, giving a sketch of the life of Dr Viard, and deducing therefrom lessons of faith, meekness, and thorough devotion to the service of God. He said the deceased was horn in Lyons in the year 1809, of a good family, not only as regards its position in society, but also to -t lie virtues of its members. He was first educated at the little seminary in his native city, and afterwards at the greater seminary. He was remarkable for his diligence and obedience. When he arrived at the canonical ago lie was ordained and commenced his missionary career in Lyons. But he desired to carry the good tidings of the gospel to countries in darkness, and in 1839 he arrived in this colony, with Dr Poinpallier, the first Bishop of New Zealand. lie served in Tauranga for several years, and then accompanied the Bishop in his mission among the Islands. Eventually he was located on Wallis Island. From thence lie went to New Caledonia, and when Bishop Poinpallier required aid he was appointed in IS4G to the diocese of Wellington. Bishop Moran dwelt on the meekness, faith, and charity displayed by Dr. Viard ; on the success which had attended his labours, and the uncomplaining bravery with which lie had, in the course of his career, encountered want, hardship, suffering and danger. He then urged upon his hearers to follow the steps of Dr. Viard, who now had passed through the portals of the tomb to appear before our Lord and Saviour.” —Wellington Post, June 10.
