WAIOTAHI HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of this Board was held yesterday', at the Governor Bowen Hotel. Present—Messrs Davies (in the chair,) Gudgeon, Dowden, Dean (secretary,) and Simpson (engineer.) The minutes of the previous meeting were lead and confirmed. THE CALEDONIAN G.M.C. The Secretary stated that he had written to the Caledonian Campany in reference to the encroachment on the street, in accordance with instructions,and had not as yet received an answer. BELLA-STSEET. The Engineer reported that he had made a culvert in Bella-street to carry off surplus water. A letter was read stating that Mr Kneebone refuses to remove his house from its present pos'tion, and it was stated that the matter would have most likely to be settled by law.

COMPLAINT. Mr Dowden stated that he and Mr Gudgeon had investigated the complaints made by Mr Jacobs against McCullough, the contractor for removing rubbish <S:c., and had found that there was not much ground for complaint. HIGHWAY BOARDS EMPOWERING ACT. A letter (which has already been published,) from the Parawai Board relative to petitioning the General Assembly to make certain amendments to the Highway Boards Empowering Act, 1871. The circular from the Chairman of the Waitakeiie Board (which has also been published) were read. The Chairman said he considered the 6th clause of the above Act objectionab'e, and that the Board should co-operate with the other Boards in endeavoring to get the Act amended. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with the other Boards to this effect. queen-street. The Engineer stated that Mr Williams, of the Provincial Hotel. Queen-street, was constructing a temporary culvert in that locality.

haven-street. A petition was read from twelve residents of Haven-street, calling attention to the almost impassable state of that thoroughfare, and requesting that sometiling should be done to repair it. The Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board had resolved to endeavour to get an advance of the £SOO from the Superintendent, and when they got the money they' would attend to the wants of Haven-street. The following letter was read : Engineer’s Office, Grahamstown. 17th June, 1872. Sir, —In reply to yours of the 14th inst. I have the honor to state that the present contract includes the pitching and metalling of the connection of the Beach Road and Burke-street. Your letter came too late to enable me to include the others, but I will see what I can do in the matter. As regards the levels of Grahamstown, your Engineer is in possession of the plans giving the levels, and lias been working on them for some mouths.—l have, &c., R. Millett, District Engineer.

J. C. Dean, Esq. COROMANDEL STREET. A letter was read from Mr George McCaul, asking for permission to open the road and footpath in Coromandelstreet to carry water supply to Goodall’e machine. The Chairman said it would be better to refer the matter to Mr Millett, District Engineer, as the Board had refused to take over this street, and therefore were not in a position to give the permission asked for. SANITARY QUESTIONS. The despatch from Lord Kimberley, Secretary of state for the Colonies, to His Excellency Governor Bowen, published in the New Zealand Gazette of May 22nd, relative to nuisances was read. It included the instructions for Inspectors of Nuisances appointed under the provisions of the Ordinance No. 1 of 27th January, 1854, and general instructions. Also a letter from Dr Simon, of the Medical Department, Whitehall, London, to Lord Kimberley. These were published in the Gazette of the above date. COCHRANE STREET. The Chairman said the culvert had got smashed up, and that the thoroughfare was considered all but impassable. He had had an interview with some of the carters engaged in the traffic in this locality, and that if the Board would give £lO they (the carter’s) would do the rest. It was agreed that the money should be paid as the work was a very necessary one, and the carter’s offer was a very good one. I’OLLEN-STREET. The Chairman said the footpath in Pollen-street was very bad, and that some of the residents had told him that something might be collected from the inhabitants towards repairing it. The Secretary was instructed to see what could be collected. The Engineer said a culvert was being put in near Mulligan’s Hotel. Instructions were given to the Engineer to proceed with the stone crossings as quickly as possible, and to fill np with stone some of the worst hole's in the street. ACCOUNTS. Several accounts were ordered to be paid. MUNICIPAL BILL. The amended draft of the Bill prepared by the Secretary was laid upon the table, and a copy ordered to be sent to Mr Beveridge. FIRE BRIGADE BUSINESS. The Engineer reported that the cast iron washers were in good order, with one exception, and that in the event of fire they would be available for service. An account from Messrs Jackson and Russell, solicitors, for £5 Is 2d, for preparing lease of fire brigade premises from Mr R. Graham to the Board, and other professional services. The Secretary was requested to get all accounts ready by next meeting, preparatory to the annual general meeting.
