KAUAERANGA HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.
A meeting of this Boanl took place last evening. Present : —Messrs Burgess (in the chair), Wallnutt, Lipsey, Mills, and Scott. MOUNT SORRELL STONE QUARRY. A letter was read from Mr J. Guthrie Pilbron, asking for the sanction of the Board to occupy a portion of a road in the district, situated above Grove’s Machine, and between the tramway and liape Creek, for the purpose of stone-cutting. The extent of ground required projected 20 feet on to the road, and, as applicant alleged, was of no use to tlie public, and as this stone-cutting at the Mount Sorrell Quarry was a new local industry, he trusted the Board would grant every facility to enable him to carry it out. It was resolved that this should stand over for the present. SERVICE OF SUMMONS. A letter was read from Mr J. Lloyd, Bailiff, requesting remuneration for serving summonses. It was resolved that the consideration of the letter should stand over until next meeting. highway boards empowering act. The following circular was read : “ Sir, —We beg to call your earnest attention to the latter section of clause 6 of ‘ The Highway Boards Empowering Act, 1871 ” (herewith annexed), which will, after tlie present month, have the practical effect of putting an end to the operations of Highway Boards in country districts. As the time prior to the meeting of Parliament is very limited, we request you will he good enough to sign, on behalf of your district, the accompanying form of protest, and forward it to His Honor the Superintendent with the least possible delay, in order that he may be enabled to bring the matter under the consideration of the General Assembly at an early period of the session. “ Francis Bethell, “ Chairman Waitakerei East Road Board. “James Steward, “ Chairman Waitakerei West Road Board. “ June 8, 1872.
“ Highway Boards Empowering Act , 1871, latter section of clause 6 li Provided that nothing herein contained shall authorise the levying after the thirtieth of June next of any rate exceeding the equivalent of any rate of five per centum upon the annual value of any property or one penny in the pound on its value for sale and any such rate imposing a contribution upon any property in excess of such amount shall upon appeal be reduced to such equivalent and that not more than one such maximum rate or smaller rates collectively amounting to a similar sum shall be levied in one year.” “ r , —l beg, on behalf of the Highway Board of , of which 1 am Chairman, to protest against the 6th clause of ‘lhe Highway Boards Empowering Act, 1871,’ which, unless amended, will have the practical effect of putting an end to any further action on the part of the Country Road Boards in the Province, and request that your Honor will take the first opportunity upon the meeting of the Assembly to endeavour to have this obnoxious clause repealed.— , Chairman. To his Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Auckland.”
Mr Scott said the Road Board system was altogether unsuited to the wants of the place, and that there must be a Municipality established. It was resolved that a reply he sent stating that such was the case, and that, therefore, the Board did not consider it necessary to take action as pointed out in the circular. PLAN OF THE DISTRICT. A letter was read from Mr Busko stating that- it would cost £4 4s to make complete a plan of the district, including native boundaries. The Chairman said in consequence of the want of a proper plan several properties had not been rated—Banks’ slaughteri house, for instance. He thought they should have a correct plan made as soon as possible. It was agreed that the work should he done, and that Mr Buske be replied to, to that effect. GRANT in aid. The Provincial Treasurer forwarded a cheque for £GI 125., on account of the share of the Road Boards Grant of the General Government for the district. ACCOUNTS. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Waiotahi Board calling attention to Mr Tyler’s account for £2l against the Kauaeranga and Waiotahi Boards. It was resolved that the consideration of the matter should stand over until next meeting. karaka and iiape roads. The Chairman said the thoroughfare in the neighbourhood of Karaka and Hape roads was in a very had state, and lie thought an application should be made to the Superintendent for £SOO which had been voted by the Council. It was resolved that the Secretary be requested to write to his Honor on the the subject, pointing out to him that without some assistance the traffic to and from the machines in this locality would he entirely stopped.
