SMALL POX IX AUCKLAND. MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL—THE WATER SUPPLY. MEETING OF SHAREHOLDERS. MEETING OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH. MAILS TO BE FUMIGATED. THE SHAREMARKET. (from our own CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, Monday 8 p.tn. A MEETING of the shareholders of the Golden Hill Investment Company was held to-day, at which it was decided to wind up the company. At the meeting of the City Council, this afternoon, his Worship the Mayor before the business of the meeting commenced, stated, that a case of small pox had been discovered in tlie town. A man who had come from the south, iu the steamship Nebraska, and had slept three nights in the town before being removed to the hospital. A meeting of the Board of Health was hell, or was being held this afternoon, and he believed that the police had taken all precaution in their power to prevent the spread of contagion, such as burning the patients clothing, burning his bedding, and removing all cause of infection, lie had been interim d that the Mail Agent of the Nebraska was also affected. There were other persons who appeared to he suffering from the same disease had gone on in the steamer to ban Francisco.
Orders have been received here from the General Government to have the mails received from San Francisco fumigated. Messrs Low and Motion ask £30,000 for their allotment, buildings, etc., or £24,000 for the springs alone ; and £2O an acre for land required for buildings, etc., the terms being two-thirds cash and the remainder to remain at interest for ten years at 6 per cent, per annum. It was moved and carried in the City Council this afternoon to have a bill pre pared to enable the Council to borrow £150.000 for a water supply. The Hon. D. McLean left Newcastle this morning for Auckland. A man named Woodworth was committed at Tanranga to take bis trial for indecently assaulting a woman at that place. From telegrams received here to-day, it is stated that Mr Kaye, the mail agent, is attacked with small-pox at Wellington. He has been removed from his residence to the quarantine ground. The disease is very mild. The conviction of Power for forgery has been quashed by the Appeal Court at Wellington. The telegraph offices will be kept open all night to night awaiting the arrival of the Nevada, now due with the English mail. ° The following are the rates ruling in the sharemarket to-day:—Caledonian, £l7 10s; Green Harp, £G 19s; Bismarck, £6 10s ; Moanataiari, £5 ; Shotover, 5s ; Central Italy, 35s ; Thames, £5 15s to £5 17 6d ; Ruby, 8s Gd ; Golden Calf, 32s to 35s ; All Nations, £3 ss. A meeting of the Board of Health was held to-day at the Police Court. The following telegram was read :—“ Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington. T. Beckham, Esq., Chairman Board of Health. The Board of Health should take every precaution when a steamer or other vessel arrives from San Frnacisco or elsewhere, as there is reason to believe that the mail agent of the Nebraska has caught the small-pox. The mail should he fumigated.—W. Gisborne.” A deputation waited on the Superintendent, and various matters were discussed as to the relative powers held by the Board. A meeting of the Board w 11 he held again to-morrow.
