COROMANDEL MINING NEWS.

About ha’f a ton of specimens fiom the Pride of Tokatea is now being crushed at the Nil Desperandurn Battery. Of course, the result is not yet known, hut we understand that every care and unusual precautions are being used to prevent the escape of any panicles of gold. The Challenger have just commenced to work on a lower level, and have fol-

lowed an old drive for 74 feet, in which they have cut two small stringers. They are driving for the rnahi reef of the ridge. In another drive on the same level, and close to that first named, gold has been seen in the stone; and some which has been taken out of it is said to have returned about Bdwts to the ton. They expect to meet witli the reef in four or five feet more driving. In the upper level a tunnel is being put in, and has now reached the distance of 50 feet. At about 22 feet a leader was struck, and has been carried on for the whole distance. Stone for a trial crushing of a few tons is being taken out from the leader, which is now about nine inches in thickness. The Tiki have driven eighty feet on the eastern side of the hill. At about ten

feet from the entrance, a lode of about nine inches was intersected, and has been followed by a cross drive to the northward. At about eighty feet this leader ran out, and in five or six more they mot with another trending to the north. This they are now following, and it is at present about eighteen inches thick. A considerable quantity of stone has been taken out, and appears to be very similar to the general crushing material taken out of Bismarck. We are told that gold has been seen in man}' of the pieces removed. The reef seems to run about N.N.W. and S.S.E., instead of, as usual on this field, about N.E and S.W.

The Specimen Company have put in a drive of eighty feet, and from it a crossdrive of twenty feet, in which they have struck a leader. Erom it they obtained a show of gold on Wednesday last. This leader has been worked upon from about ten feet from the entrance. The Emily have driven on their low

level 230 feet, and crossed a leader 12 inches wide with good prospects in the stone. Gold has been seen in the leader which is somewhat broken up. They expect to cut another a few feet further

n, which will be that for which they lave been driving, which was seen on

the surface, and from which we understand a yield of three ounces was obtained about three years ago from five or six tons.

The Preece’s Point Goldmining Company started last Monday to open out a leader which they came across on the beach just, above high-water mark. Gold was seen in the stone and fair prospects washed.

The Preece’s Point Beach Mining Company have started a shaft on Preece’s Point leader, which it is purposed to take down some distance before opening out. The Trig Hill main drive has been put in 180 feet, and a cross-cut has been driven about 45 feet, at the end of which they are rising upon a leader of about eight inches in thickness, from which gold has been obtained. The lower level is in 90 feet, and they have commenced to open out on the lode which was some time ago cut in the old drive which they have been following and straightening.

The Golcouda are driving each way upon the leader cut in the winze, from the lower No. 1 tunnel. We hear that good prospects have been obtained by washing, and also that gold has been seen in the stone taken from it. A contract for 200 or 300 feet of the lower tunnel has been let, in which contract it is probable that a connection will be made with No. 2 winze. In both winzes from the surface stopmg out is going on. In tlie Pride of Tiki the contractors started working on the low level on Thurday last, on a leef of two feet nine inches.

The reservoir for the use of the Beach Battery of the New Zealand Company has not yet been completed, and the engine still remains at rest. The berdans have been p'aced in position, and the pipes, &c., for conveying water to them are being fixed. During the month of March a company, with a capital of £50.000, in £1 shares, entitled, ; ‘The New Zea'and Real Propel ty and Goldmining Investment Company,” was registered in London.— Coromandel Mail. The United Company are driving for the reef which is supposed to have thrown a'l the specimens that are found in the Pukewhau Creek. They have a drive in 55 feet, and a cross drive 50 feet. Several leaders were cut in both, and a large one in the face to-day. The Wilhelrnine Lease are going on with the tunnel put in by Senior’s party 310 feet to catch a leader said to be traversing their ground, and from which prospects have been washed.—(Communicated.)
