A public meeting was held to-day to urge* upon the Government the commencement of the Waitara Railway. The ranges are covered witli snow from the summit of Mount Egmont down to the base. WESTLAND. Greymouth, June 15. Mace’s crushing of 600 tons of stone from Shiel’s line of reef at Inangahua has yielded 985 ounces of gold. Cornelius Warren and John Dempster have been smothered in their claim.
WELLINGTON Wellington, June 15. The “Independent” of to-day says that the data for the Auckland and Waikato Railway have been placed in Messrs Brogden’s hands. Thb tenders will be submitted in a few days. Arrived, the Thames from London with a general cargo. The “ Independent ” says the terms for the Mataura Railway have been settled. Brogden receives £86,000 exclusive of rails and rolling stock, which will be purchased jointly by Brogden and the Agent-General, Brogden receiving five per cent on the purchase money. The “ Independent ” also says tenders for the Waikato Railway will be in this week.
In the Appeal Court to-day judgment was given in the case of Whitaker and Lundon. The judgment was that Whitaker and Lundon possess no right at law or in equity which are taken away or affected by the passing of the Native Lands Act of 1869 or by proceedings of the Native Lands Court in pursuance of this Act.
