COROMANDEL.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
June 13. Golconda, —A cont r act for two or three hundred feet in the lower tunnel in No. 2 has just been let; this will carry them to No. 2 w : nze, sunk from the surface. In the winze put down in the chamber from No. 1 tunnel, the leader is being driven upon from both sides with good results. Sloping out from either side of No. 1 and 2 winzes is being pushed on, and the siefE taken to the battery. A decided improvement is visible on the plates tins last day or two.
John Bell.- —In the lower level of this claim a broken up leader, 18 inches wide, has just come in (he face 75 feet in. The manager intends to fake out two tons for trial. Sinking the shaft to the 100 feet level is finished, and timbering up is being completed to enable the new conti act to he entered upon.
Von Tempsky. — Have a lumiel in 90 feet. Several stringers were crossed and tried, giving good prospects. At the face of the’dr've a most singular formation has appeared, composed of large water-worn boulders and sand, as if it had originally been the head of a creek. We understand that gold has been washed from tin’s. Tin's tunnel is being carried on to intersect the Kapangn. Scotty’s Hill, and other known gold bearing leaders, which they expect to get very shortly. Scotty’s Hill.— -This company have just bioken into the old drive that was opened ont on a leader some nine years ago, and which gave such good results when crushed. It appears they were driven ont hv water, hut the present lower level, now in 60 feet, has completely drained the ground, and will enable them to clear the old drive, when stoning will he commenced and a cross-cut put into the creek on the leader. They have a block of GO feet to stope out. The Sceptre. —A new tunnel has been started by tin’s company on the opposite side of the h’P, to riteisect the Nil DAspernndmn leader. It is supposed that it will be got much sooner f• - om the present level. The old diive w>M a 1 so he continued to prospect the ground.
The Cgp.d aie now going through hard short-country. Water is coming in fast, which leads the manager to enppose they are not far from the leader being d iven for. On the eastern side of the hill a tunnel is in GO feet through fair count.y. Thev are going for a leader which was opened on the surface, and anticipate cutting it very soon. The Nil Desperandum Battery is hard at work putting tlnough the Pride of Iskal : a quartz. It is showing up for 2oz. to the ton. The specimens will he crushed by themselves. A good return is expected. The Whaxaroa are now in with their level 30 feet. At 100 feet they expect to cut itie leader got in the Flying Cloud.
The Victory’s tunne 1 is now in 225 feet. A broken leader has been followed to the face, at the bottom of which another has been cut. It is intended to c>oss drive, next week, for he Pride of Tokatea Tender. Tin’s would have been done ea-T’er, hut they have been waiting for the d : spute about Ca-ters ground to be settled so as to amalgamate with them. The Peep o’ Day are going on with the bl anch dWve in the upper level, and following the leader from the old Swedish Clown lode, which was stoped out for about 50 feet, and gave an ounce to the ton ; a little loose gold is seen. Another c oss leader is to he driven on in a day or two to test it. In the lower level the lode in the cross-cut sIIH eontmues well defined. The stone is looking better. The Bismarck. —When visiting this mine to-dav, we were shown about 1501 b. of specimens, 1 alien out since Monday, at noon. Some of them were very rich. There are about 9001 h. on hand altogether. On the upper level, at 100 feet, a winze is Heine- put down to connect the lower level. It will come in about 12 feet from lower winze. It is now down 50 feet, and at 90 feet will he through. From the winze on lower level two drives are being carried, telling the specimen leader with them. We saw gold in the face, and some fair specimens taken out by the workmen while looking over them. One drive is in 25 feet, and the other 10 feet. The lode looks very well indeed. The Pride of Tokatea arc stoping out in upper level, and continuing their main tunnel. The Black Hill have commenced to sink a winze on the leader from which they obtained gold when putting in their level. Some very good looking stone was taken out to-day. The MuuniY’s Hill arc still extending their main tunnel. The ground is very soft, requiring well timbering. They intend opening out to-morrow on the lode cut some days ago. A leader, branching off from the main tunnel is also being followed, and is becoming solid at face.
