MELBOURNE. May 30. The amendment on the Address in reply was agreed to by 39 to 34, giving a majority of five against the Government. Mr Duffy moved the adjournment of the House until Friday, in order to consult his colleagues! A portion of the Address, relating personally to Mr Duffy, was expunged at the request of Mr Vale. The House adjourned at half-past 12. Two men have been blown to pieces in a mine at Sandhurst by the explosion of a keg of gunpowder. The Berry Inquiry Committee have finished taking evidence, and will report to the House to morrow. There are various political rumours in regard to the Ministry, hut‘nothing is yet decided. The result will be known to-morrow. Friday,- May 31. . It is expected that a Ministerial statement will be made in the House this afternoon. Rumours are current of a new Government. Sir Hercules and Lady Robinson visited the city boforeproceeding to Sydney. The Nubia left in the afternoon. .In the Legislative Assembly, an adjournment was asked for, in order to obtain the answer of the Government to the request for a dissolution. The Opposition objected, and carried a motion to meet to-morrow. The report of the Berry Committee has been submitted. It states that the evidence established certain charges relative to the private life of Mr Berry, but not connected with the appointment of his father-in-law. A branch of the Bank of New Zealand is to be established. Sailed : Macedon. June 4. The Ministry have resigned ; and Mr Francis has been sent for. When the Assembly met this afternoon, Mr Dutfv announced the resignation to the Assembly, and also informed the House that Mr Francis had been sent for. At Mr Francis’ request, an adjournment, until Thursday, was agreed to, in order to give him time to complete his arrangements. Mr Duffy promised that on Thursday he would lay on the table of the House the communications which had passed between himself and the Governor on the subject. Twenty nominations have been received from Sydney for the Melbourne Cup; and the other races were well filled. For the Marbyrnong Plate there are 21 entries ; for the Derby, 63 ; for the Oaks, 40; Mares’ Produce Stakes, 58. Out of £900,000 loan for water supply, £513,000 have been expended on the Colihan scheme which requires £631,000 more for its completion. A flood has occurred on the lowlying lands at Ballarat. June 5.

The new Ministry will probably include Mr Francis, as Chief Secretary ; Mr Stephen and Mr Wrixon, as Crown Law Officers ; Mr Langton, as Treasurer ; and Mr Gillies, as (perhaps) Secretary for Lands. Mr Duffy has received a telegram from the Sydney Government stating that it is desirous of coining to an agreement on the Border Duties question, in accordance with the proposal made, but that the arrangement should be made under Legislative sanction. Nothing further has transpired in reference to the Ministry. Mr Francis lias not yet completed his arrangements. Several charges against the Rev. Duncan Fraser have been brought before this Presbytery and referred to the Ballarat Presbytery. SYDNEY. May 30. The Condemned Criminals Nichols and Lester.— A meeting of the Executive Council will be held on Friday, at which the case of the condemned criminals Nichols and Lester, for the murders on the Parramatta River, will be taken into consideration. o’clock, yesterday morning, the water police found the body of a man at Fort Macquarie under circumstances which leave little doubt that the unfortunate man committed suicide. Upon examination of the body of the deceased, it was found that the throat was cut, and a razor covered with blood was discovered in his inside coat pocket, the razor case being on the ground.
