An interesting ceremony took place this afternoon at Government House, being the presentation of a sword, the gift of Her Majesty the Queen to Fox (Pokiha), the Arawa chief. The presentation was made at Government House by his Excellency the Governor, in presence of Major Kemp (Te Kepa), Major Ropata, Paul (Paora)of Orakei, and several other chiefs of distinction, with their wives. The party was afterwards liberally entertained by his Excellency. This is the last presentation of six swords sent out by her Majesty. Last evening a fire occurred at Newton, whereby there was a narrow escape of total destruction to a house occupied by Mr Moss Isaacs. It appears that while some linen was being aired it caught fire, and set the front room ablaze. Owing, however, to the great presence of mind displayed by the servants, comparatively little mischief was done, not amounting to more than a loss of £l2 worth of property. The house is, we understand, insured in the Norwich Union.

VICTORIA. Melbourne, May 26. The debate on the amendment in reply to the Governor’s Speech resulted in a majority of two in favour of the Ministers.
