MINING.

Nonpareil. — Yesterday, four hundredweight of specimens were crushed at the Mauukau Battery, and a clean-up took place from the general crushing. The retorting will take place this morning, and a good return may be looked for. Crushwill be resumed to-day, with twenty head instead of ten. North Devon. —The Okarita shaft has been hailed out, aud, now that this haß been effected, work will be started immediately, and driving for the lodes that strike through the ground will be carried on vigorously. There is little doubt but that some of .the reefs which are now known to run through this ground will turn out well, and this company has now a good prospect before them. Queen of,- Beauty.— A clean-up has taken place at A 7 iekery’s Battery for this claim, after eleven days’ run, and the return is a most satisfactory one, amounting to one hundred and forty-eight ounces and eleven penny-weights of gold. This, inaddition to the yield obtained from the other battecy, places the fortnightly yield far above previous ones. Manukau Battery. —At this machine crushing was started yesterday for the Poverty and Charleston tributers with ten head. They have about thirty tons to put through besides specimens, and a rich return is expected. Lowe’s tribute party also started on a parcel of about sixty tons, from which the usual average return is looked for. Twenty-third of June. —ln Ibis mine they are now working on a block of the No. 1 lode, which was left standing between the upper level and the surface, and it is e ipectedto yield very richly, as good gold can be seen frequently, although no rich specimens have been taken out sinco the last crushing. They are also sinking a winze on the lode from the upper to the lower level, which is now dowu fifteen feet, and this will open up auother good block for working on. Bright Smile. —Driving on the reef from the lowest or water level has beeu commenced. This will give them a block of ground to work out about a hundred feet long and fifteen feet of backs, which may be expected to yield very well. Red Queen. —They are still driving along the footwall of the No. 2 lode in this mine, and in a few days another cross-cut will be put in to test the value of the lode further on. The manager still keeps some men employed working on the small leader, in order, to pay the expenses of the mine, as this lode still continues to turn out well.
