RIFLE ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT.
FIRST DAY’S SHOOTING. Yesterday the first day’s firing of the annual gathering of the Association, for the purpose of finishing the shooting season, was completed at Tararu. Firing was to have commenced at 8 a.rn., but it was long after this before the first match came off. This was the All Comers match, for which no less than 57 competitors entered, Auckland being represented by three or four, amongst whom we noticed Cameron, the winner of many good prizes in his own district at different times. It was not until half-past two o’clock that they got through with the first two ranges, from which it will be seen" that Thompson, a member of the Naval Brigade, who the other day won Mr Payne’s star, presented for competition to the whole of the Volunteers, obtained the highest score. The following are the conditions of the match, and the shooting was good, considering that the bull’s-eye was only eight inches square : Ist Match.—All Comers. Ranges and 300 yards; Wimbledon targets ; position, any; 5 shots each range; small bores to allow one point per shot. Ist prize, £3 and pair duelling pistols ; 2nd, £2 and gold breast pin ; 3rd, £1 and meerschaum pipe; 4th, 10s and rifle ; sth, one pair trousers and vest ;• 6th, one volume Shakespeare and halfdozen beer; 7th, saddle mutton and pair razor!; Bth, one pair ducks and one hlunderbus; 9th, half-year’s Evening Star ; 10th, lib. tobacco and knife.
The prizes were won by the following men, the different ties being decided according to the Wimbledon regulations : Thompson, 32 points, Ist; G. Partington, 30, 2nd ; Thomas, 30, 3rd ; Wooderson, 29, 4th; McLeod, 29,5 th; Capt. Barnett, 29, 6th ; Fenton, 29, 7th ; Walker, J. W., 28. Bth ; Comer, 28, Fitz Gerald, 28, 10th. Second Class—2oo and 300 yards; third-class targets ; position, any ; 5 shots each range. Ist prize, 30s and hair guard : 2nd, £1 and gold pin ; 3rd, 10s and meerschaum pipe ; 4th, one fender ; sth, half-year to Guardian ; 6th, leg mutton and three bottles salt; 7th, joint of meat; Bth, wax taper and stand ; 9th, Coromandel scrip (Tookey), The following are the scores :
The following are therefore the highest B'orers: —Ist, James Rowe, 34 points; 2nd, Schofield, 33 ; 3rd, Lipsoy, 31 ; 4th, Wilson, 31 ; sth, Long, 30; 6th, Buttle, 29; 7th, Rae, 29; Bth, Hart, 29; 9th, Graham. 28. The Fii st Class match at 400, 500 and 600 yards will be commenced at 8 a.m. this morning, and when this is finished the Special match postponed yesterday will be proceeded with. The next firing for the second class will most likely take place on Wednesday next. ’ (
